Researcher 3 - Field and Plot Management Full‑time position at the Northwest Research and Outreach Center (NWROC), University of Minnesota – College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resources Sciences (CFANS). Located on the 40‑acre Magnusson Research Farm in Roseau, MN (four miles west of Roseau).

Position Overview This Research Professional 3 reports to Research Supervisor 4 and works onsite at the Magnusson Farm to support small‑plot research. Both 9‑ and 12‑month appointments are available; candidates may select one or both. Benefits are offered for the full appointment period.

Major Areas of Accountability

Research Plot Management and Site Maintenance (30%) – plan and prepare field experiments, lay out plots, perform specialized tillage, fertilization, pesticide and treatment applications, maintain sites, and oversee harvesting; also operate tractors, mechanical equipment and manage pesticide handling.

General Site and Equipment Maintenance (20%) – maintain, repair, and upkeep plots, farm equipment, and facilities; keep inventory records and place orders for supplies, fertilizers, pesticides, and equipment.

Experiments and Sample/Data Collection (15%) – conduct complex experiments and collect samples for statistical analysis, including plant and soil sampling, processing, weighing, drying, grinding, sub‑sampling, packaging, and shipment.

Data Collection (15%) – observe crops, record, analyze, and summarize data; electronically enter information into Excel and other programs; monitor MAWN stations at Mavie, Winaska, Williams, and west of Greenbush, MN.

Laboratory Setup (10%) – organize and calibrate laboratory equipment necessary for research tasks; include specialized planters, sprayers, fertilizer applicators, and scales.

Supervision (5%) – supervise part‑time summer labor when needed.

Meetings and Events (5%) – attend local and regional agricultural meetings and field days to network with university staff, crop consultants, growers, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications Required Qualifications

BA/BS degree plus at least four (4) years of relevant experience in agriculture, or an advanced degree plus at least two (2) years of relevant experience; or a combination equating to eight (8) years.

Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Certified Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain one within six (6) months of hire.

Strong communication, collaboration, observance, and detail‑orientation skills; ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and data entry/analysis.

Valid driver’s license and ability to operate tractor or combine and load a trailer with a pickup truck.

Ability to pass a respirator fit test.

Desired Qualifications

MSc. in plant pathology, plant breeding, agronomy, biology, or related fields.

Experience in field research.

Experience operating and maintaining field research equipment such as tractors, tillage equipment, plot planters, and sprayers.

Pay and Benefits Pay Range: $28.00 – $30.00 per hour, depending on education, qualifications, and experience.

Appointment: 100% appointment, 9‑ or 12‑month option.

Position Type: Civil‑Service.
