The Surgical Scrub Technologist plays a vital role in the BJISG Operating Room. A Bone & Joint Scrub Tech ensures quality patient care during all operative procedures while maintaining a sterile field, anticipating the needs of the surgeon, pulling cases according to preference cards, and ensuring the surgeon has all necessary items to complete cases. The Surgical Scrub Technologist candidate should have the necessary knowledge and ability to appropriately handle surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment as required during orthopaedic surgical procedures. The candidate will also assist the Sterile Processing Department with proper decontamination of all surgical instruments, re‑assembly and proper wrapping of surgical trays, and be knowledgeable in sterilization procedures and safety/infection control measures.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma

Graduate of a Certified Surgical Technologist program, national certification preferred

Minimum 2 years of experience working in an operating room required

Familiarity with orthopedic procedures preferred

Good communication skills

Ability to use computerized software efficiently

Neat, professional appearance

Fast paced self‑starter

Highly organized and astute attention for detail

RESPONSIBILITIES

Makes sure all appropriate surgical instruments are ready for the surgeon

Acquires and maintains an understanding of surgical procedures being performed

Ensures proper sterilization techniques (OSHA standard) are used for instrument trays

Ensures all sterilization indicators have turned and there are no breaks/tears in the wrappers

Ensures that filters are in all the metal caskets and integrators in trays have turned

Keeps supply room and operating room neat and well stocked

Coordinates the maintenance scheduling/testing of the autoclave and other surgical equipment used in the operating room

Can speak to the various runs that can be performed and the parameters that need to be met when utilizing the sterilizer

Can name the various types of tests that are needed each day to assure the proper functioning of the sterilizer

Knows how to do a biological test and what is needed to show positive/negative results

Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure

Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure

Performs the labeling of all solutions and medications in accordance with regulatory guidelines

Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed

Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants

Helps in draping sterile field

Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure

Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure

Prepares sterile dressings and applies them according to surgeon’s standards

Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization

Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room

Assists with the moving and positioning of the patient. Identification of all pressure points and needs for additional padding to prevent pressure injuries

Maintains patient confidentiality; complies with HIPAA and compliance guidelines established by the practice

Maintains detailed knowledge of practice management and other computer software as it relates to job functions

Performs additional duties as requested by Manager or Team Leader/Supervisor
