Amphenol ICC
Product Development Engineer (Precision Engineering Focus)
Amphenol ICC, Yocumtown, Pennsylvania, United States
POSITION SUMMARY
The Product Development Engineer role will focus on Precision Engineering and serve a pivotal role on the Amphenol CS's Cable Backplane Product Development team. The ideal candidate will blend expert knowledge from electrical and mechanical engineering to develop, design, and maintain the mechanisms on our next generation of high speed cabled backplanes. The Product Development Engineer will design float mechanisms, cartridges, and similar mechanisms that enable our cabled backplanes to solve our customer's needs. This role also requires interaction with internal manufacturing sites, external vendors, and all of the other engineering disciplines within the organization.
A strong candidate should be motivated by technical challenges, know how to be a truly collaborative member of a team, and be willing to wear a number of hats throughout the many phases of a project.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Understand the evolving industry needs, and resultant requirements for our products.
Significant participation in automation design, working directly with the NPI and Machine Design (automation) teams to ensure the product design can be built in high volume, efficiently, and with the highest quality.
Work directly with Signal Integrity (EE) team to ensure the mechanical design supports the electrical performance requirements of the product.
Work directly with Mechanical Integrity team to ensure the mechanical design provides for a high reliability (quality) over the life of the product, including meeting all applicable industry, and internal, specifications.
Collaborate with software engineers to integrate electronic control systems into mechanical frameworks as needed.
Aid in material selection (metal, plastic, surface coatings, etc).
Develop initial product specifications and technical documentation.
Interface directly with customers during multiple phases of a project, and aiding in the sales process.
Work directly with internal and external suppliers on Design for Manufacture (DFM), prototyping exercises, production tooling design and qualifications, and occasional travel to manufacturing and assembly sites around the world.
Provide technical assistance to product marketing and sales teams as needed.
Participate in fixture/tooling design and in creating and managing test plans.
Active participation in cost reduction projects (alternative material discovery, manufacturing efficiency improvements, etc).
Occasional requirement of making presentations to upper management on projects/development.
Occasional required attendance of industry trade shows, expositions, conferences.
QUALIFICATIONS
MS/BS in Engineering with significant experience in an electronics industry required; PhD in Engineering preferred
A robust understanding of both mechanical and electronic systems is crucial, as is expertise in computer-aided design (CAD) software (Creo, Solidworks, etc.)
Minimum of 5+ years industry experience in design, preferably within the precision engineering discipline
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; work history of collaboration and execution during the various stages of product design
Good understanding of GD&T methodologies, experience in tolerance analysis, and FEA tools
Knowledge of copper alloys and high-performance engineering plastics, experience designing and working with CNC milled parts and/or in sheet metal fabrication
Proficiency with MS Office suite
Ability to communicate with both technical & non-technical stakeholders
Ability to work in a dynamic team environment
Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently
Ability to travel ~15% domestic and international
