Job Description What You Will Do:
Hands‑on maintenance of traffic and flagging
Highway maintenance and repair work activities (e.g., pothole patching, spread berm, repair guardrails, crack seal, litter pick‑up, drainage, vegetation management such as weed eating, brush cutting, and mowing)
Operation of heavy equipment (e.g., dump truck, loader) and hand tools (e.g., chainsaw)
Perform snow & ice operations

Official Position Description:
Operates basic equipment and performs general highway maintenance duties which vary by season, including construction, improvement, maintenance, repair and cleaning of highways and/or roadways and right‑of‑ways. Responsibilities include excavating, grading ditches, digging channels, cleaning waterways, cutting brush, applying chemicals, patching and sealing berm and pavement, mixing mortar and concrete, shoveling backfill, installing and repairing catchbasins, completing drainage work, clearing surface, reshaping trenches, pouring hot tar, removing trash, mopping grass, moving and loading supplies, and more. Operates snow plow, spreader, brakes dispensing equipment, manages traffic signs and pavement markings, performs emergency response and clean‑up, traffic control, maintenance on equipment, and clerical tasks including radio communications, daily logs, and public inquiries.

Qualifications Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & decimals, percentages & fractions; ability to read, write & speak common English vocabulary; 3 months training or 3 months experience in operation of basic equipment. Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above. Note: Applicant must have valid Commercial Driver’s License at the appropriate level pursuant to approved position description on file to operate motorized equipment of size & type regulated by section 4506 of Ohio Revised Code.

Supplemental Information This position is overtime eligible based on FLSA Standards.
All bargaining unit new hires must serve a one (1) year probationary period.
Position will be filled pursuant to the provision of the OCSEA/AFSCME Contract.
The final candidate selected for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check. An individual assessment of an applicant’s prior criminal convictions will be made before excluding an applicant from consideration.
All final applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments. An applicant with a positive test shall not be offered employment. This position is also subject to federal testing regulations pursuant to 49 CFR Part 40 (Federal Drug and Alcohol Regulations) and 49 CFR Part 382 (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) which prohibits the use of marijuana, including medical marijuana. Medical marijuana is prohibited as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test for final applicants in this position.
