Assistant General Counsel (FERC) American Electric Power (AEP) invites applicants to apply for the Assistant General Counsel – FERC position, which focuses on federal energy regulatory matters, including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs), and related statutes.

Job Summary The role leads all aspects of AEP’s practice before FERC, drafting, reviewing, filing, and presenting comments, briefs, testimony, legal opinions, and coordinating legal advice to company management on federal energy regulatory matters.

Responsibilities

Render legal advice to company representatives on federal energy regulatory activities and support regulatory, legal, finance, operations, and other departments.

Represent the company in RTO stakeholder matters in PJM, SPP, and MISO.

Collaborate with FERC/RTO Policy, Federal Affairs, and Regulatory groups to advise on matters under FERC jurisdiction, including the Federal Power Act, DOE Organization Act, and relevant state regulations.

Coordinate risk‑management efforts with internal teams, identify critical risk issues, and provide recommendations.

Provide legal assessments, interpretations, and representation on a range of regulatory statutes and corporate policies.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctorate.

Eight or more years of experience as a practicing attorney in private practice or a corporate legal department, including at least five years focusing on FERC matters.

FERC‑related legal experience, preferably with a law firm, corporate legal department, or on the staff of a rate regulatory body such as FERC or a state regulatory agency.

Active license to practice law in Washington, DC or Ohio; eligibility to practice in Ohio corporate section acceptable.

Understanding of legal and regulatory issues relating to electric utilities, federal energy regulation of transmission and RTOs, and managing FERC regulatory proceedings, tariff filings, and rulemakings.

Experience preparing briefs, motions, case‑evaluation summaries, witness preparation, hearings, and filings before FERC, state public utility commissions, and other relevant government bodies.

Excellent advocacy, negotiation, written communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, and initiative to work independently.

Where You'll Work On‑site in Washington, DC, or at AEP Headquarters in Columbus, OH.

Compensation Grade: SP20-012 Range: $188,524 – $245,080 per year.

Physical Demand Level Sedentary work: may involve walking or standing for brief periods; occasional lifting up to 10 pounds.
