Johnson & Johnson MedTech is developing a robotic surgical platform that will set a new standard for the modern OR and transform the surgical experience. OTTAVA is designed as a multi‑specialty soft‑tissue surgery robot, activating the benefits of AI/ML, connecting health data inside the operating room and out.

Overview: The

Manager, Instruments & Accessories Design Integration

will provide functional leadership for a group of talented and versatile engineers working in a matrix environment to create the best‑in‑class surgical devices for the OTTAVA Surgical Robot. The Instruments and Accessories Design Integration Team is responsible for implementing the framework and processes to integrate, operate, and troubleshoot instruments on the incredibly complex Johnson & Johnson OTTAVA Robotic Systems within the R&D organization. You will lead a team consisting of engineers and technicians that will maintain multiple configurations of instruments to support the R&D testing environment, troubleshoot and resolve known issues, document novel issues that arise during use, and partner with Instrument Design functions to evaluate and improve instruments under development. Applicants should have experience working with complex electromechanical systems but need not have a technical background in robotics. This is a phenomenal opportunity for someone with an interest in medical robotics to gain deep technical and industry knowledge, while providing a critical service to the OTTAVA program.

Core Job Responsibilities:

Lead the I&A Design Integration Team including functional leadership, HR responsibility, budget and planning to support project teams.

Support talent development including developing technical and leadership skills as well as clinical understanding.

Develop strategies and solutions in a fast‑paced environment that ensure a comprehensive evaluation of device performance.

Lead and/or support initiatives to improve organizational effectiveness and efficiency including test and process improvements.

Lead and /or support innovation projects targeted to a specific business need.

Lead and/or support technical root cause investigations leading to recommended plan of action.

Collaborate with cross functional partners to advance/accelerate R&D projects.

Engage third party suppliers as needed to support R&D needs.

Collaborate with Design and Manufacturing Engineering to deliver cost efficient and innovative products and processes.

Collaborate with regulatory partners to ensure accuracy and alignment of strategies in support of device submissions.

Hire and grow team according to business plan. Partner with recruiters for hiring and employee onboarding.

Coach and mentor the team.

Qualifications Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, And Experience:

Minimum B.S (Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or other related Engineering field equivalent).

6+ years of practical experience in the design and commercialization of medical products.

Demonstrated ability to deliver R&D projects and strong data analysis skills and leadership.

Excellent written & verbal communication and presentation skills.

Comfortable with all phases of product development lifecycle from concept to production.

Hands‑on with a track record of working well in a team environment.

Experience with designing and developing products in an FDA or other regulated industry.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, And Experience:

2+ years of engineering management experience, preferably with complex mechanical or electro‑mechanical systems.

Ability to lead and drive outcomes across a matrix environment.

Experience with the development of robotic and or laparoscopic surgical tools is highly desired.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $134,000.00 to $231,150.00
