Purpose of Position
Directs institutional research within System Administration. Guides business intelligence functions and provides robust analytical support for the executive director and System administrative offices. Manages ongoing initiatives related to the UT System Dashboard, seekUT, and other major projects. Conducts advanced quantitative analysis of critical higher education issues and presents clear written and graphical findings for various audiences. Oversees and mentors assistant directors and staff, and provides guidance on data governance, predictive analytics, machine learning, and data visualization.
Essential Functions
Manages the research and business intelligence teams to align processes and priorities, focus on staff development, and build tools to support UT System leadership decisions. Oversees task allocation and team performance.
Provides robust analysis to the executive director and UT System executives; conducts research studies, contributes to analysis of research questions, writes project results, and completes ad hoc data requests.
Oversees data collection, analysis, and reporting for ongoing and special requests; works with assistant directors to ensure quality control and process improvements; maintains the UT System Dashboard and seekUT.
Represents the executive director at meetings and on projects as assigned.
Translates data and analysis into clear messages for internal and external communications; oversees regular and special reports and develops new communication avenues.
Designs research approaches using sound methodology (inferential and descriptive) for UT System administration and the 13 institutions.
Stays current with literature and best practices in higher education and data science; monitors trends to identify topics for new research and aligns project goals with system-wide and campus initiatives.
Provides oversight of administrative operations for the office, including budget, accounts, and staff.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Advanced knowledge of higher education topics such as institutional research and planning, student outcomes, faculty productivity, research expenditures, and institutional efficiency.
Project management and the ability to lead collaborative research and business intelligence teams.
Experience conducting research and analyzing quantitative information with a focus on communications and policy evaluation and development.
Knowledge of ETL processes and data warehousing concepts; ability to ensure BI applications enhance decision-making.
Experience analyzing, integrating, and communicating complex ideas at conceptual, strategic, and tactical levels.
Experience with a full range of statistical methods (sampling, survey response bias, ANOVA, linear regression, logistic regression, survival analysis, cluster analysis, etc.).
Experience creating models using supervised and unsupervised machine learning as a data scientist.
Strong communication and stakeholder engagement with internal and external partners.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree or equivalent in a social science discipline, educational research, or a closely related field and seven (7) years of institutional research experience in higher education, public administration, or equivalent in the private sector OR bachelor’s degree in a related field and ten (10) years of experience in institutional research in higher education, public administration, or equivalent in the private sector.
Five (5) years of experience conducting analytical and policy studies that support decision making and planning.
Experience analyzing data from national and state database higher education systems.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD or equivalent in a social science discipline, educational research, or related field.
Ten (10) years of experience in institutional research in higher education or equivalent in the private sector.
Eight (8) years of experience conducting analytical and policy studies that support decision making and planning.
Established record of publications and presentations.
Working Conditions
May work around standard office conditions
Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation
Requires occasional evening or weekend hours
Additional Information The standard retirement plan for this position is the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. The incumbent may elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) subject to 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. Participation in either TRS or ORP is mandatory.
