Compensation HR Specialist
Join a collaborative and service-focused Human Resources team as our next Compensation HR Specialist. In this role, you will support developing and maintaining fair, competitive, and legally compliant compensation programs. You'll conduct classification and salary studies, prepare market analysis and survey responses, produce compensation reports, and ensure the accuracy of HRIS data and transactions that affect employee pay. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys analytical work, has strong attention to detail, and is motivated by helping ensure fair, consistent, and competitive pay practices across the organization. May underfill at Senior HR Technician or HR Technician levels.
POSITION SALARY RANGE: (Based on experience and qualifications) HR Specialist: $58,000 - $68,000 Senior HR Technician: $53,500 - $62,500

Key Responsibilities
- Market Research and Analysis: Participate in and analyze salary surveys and market data to benchmark existing positions and identify compensation trends.
- Job Evaluation: Assist in evaluating new and existing positions to determine appropriate job classifications, salary scales, and FLSA status.
- Data Management: Collect, maintain, and ensure the accuracy and confidentiality of compensation data within HRIS and other compensation systems. Data management within Excel, including use of pivot tables.
- Compliance: Support efforts to ensure all compensation practices comply with relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations (e.g., FLSA, EEO).
- Reporting: Prepare reports and presentations summarizing compensation analysis and recommendations for management and HR partners.
- Support: Respond to compensation-related inquiries from employees and managers, providing information clearly and concisely.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience or an internship in human resources or a related analytical role.
- Advanced experience utilizing Excel for compensation and other HR-related tasks.
- Familiarity with HRIS software (e.g., Workday, SAP, PeopleSoft).
- Knowledge of federal and state compensation laws and regulations.
Typical Duties
- Analyzes, summarizes, and/or reviews data, reports findings, interprets results and/or makes recommendations.
- Performs research and gathers new information, as necessary, to assist management or department staff.
- Assists employees, management, staff, and members of the general public with human resources information, policies and procedures.
- Provides administrative and clerical support to management and professional human resource staff.
- Receives calls and/or greets visitors, takes and relays messages, responds to requests for information; provides information or directs caller/visitor to appropriate individual.
- Maintains files and electronic records, including employee data and human resources information systems (HRIS).
- Provides front desk coverage, as needed.
- May prepare meeting rooms and take minutes in meetings.
- Performs other related technical duties and special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
HR Specialist Level: Graduation from high school or equivalent plus four years of increasingly responsible technical HR and/or program coordination experience. Education may be substituted for experience up to two years.
Senior HR Technician Level: Graduation from high school or equivalent plus three years of increasingly responsible equivalent to HR Technician. Education may be substituted for experience up to two years.
All Levels: Strong knowledge of and ability to apply principles and practices of assigned human resources functions. Ability to perform duties under general supervision according to established guidelines and with a high degree of independence. Must be well organized, detail-oriented and able to effectively prioritize, manage, and meet work objectives within established timelines. Demonstrated ability to exercise proper discretion, judgment, and decision making. Ability to understand and follow relevant HR policies, procedures, laws, and regulations. Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Knowledge of and ability to apply established office procedures, data management, records management, and recordkeeping requirements. Demonstrated proficiency in the use and operation of a desktop computer, including office software systems such as Microsoft Word and Excel, electronic records management, HRIS, and general office systems. Ability to operate standard office equipment.
Working Conditions
Light physical effort and usually comfortable working positions. May be exposed to discomforts associated with constant monitoring of computer video display screens. Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior and various responsibilities.
Career Ladder
Senior HR Technician to HR Specialist: Promotions to Human Resources Specialist are limited to positions identified by the department as eligible based on organizational needs. These changes are contingent upon the availability of funding. Prior to advancement employees must meet the following criteria:
- Consistently perform at a satisfactory or higher level in their current role
- Meet all established minimum qualifications for the higher classification
- Receive a recommendation from their supervisor or manager
- Obtain approval from the Department Director
