RN Clinical Nurse – 6th Floor Med Surg Join to apply for the RN Clinical Nurse - 6th floor Med Surg role at UNC Health.

This 48‑bed medical‑surgical department focuses on adult patients with diagnoses such as diabetes, stroke, kidney failure, respiratory distress, sepsis, liver disease, and other medical issues.

The nursing team manages IVs, access devices, NG tubes, drains, urinary catheters, and wound vacs with nurse‑to‑patient ratios of 1:5/6 and nursing assistant ratios of 1:8/10. Training and orientation is customized by the unit educator.

Summary A Registered Nurse at UNC Health Wayne is a member of the patient‑care team who applies the nursing process to provide scientific and professional care, supports providers, directs other licensed and non‑licensed teammates, and delivers holistic patient care in accordance with the North Carolina Board of Nursing scope.

Responsibilities

Uses the nursing process to plan, provide, supervise, and document professional nursing care in accordance with provider orders, hospital and nursing standards, policies, and regulations.

Individualizes the plan of care based on patient baseline needs and response, evaluates progress, and updates the plan.

Demonstrates competence with complex patients, performs bedside point‑of‑care testing, prioritizes care, and consults resources for high‑risk discharge planning.

Collaborates with providers, interdisciplinary teammates, patients, and families.

Follows systems that support the nursing process and delivers safe, effective patient care.

Complies with regulatory guidelines.

Monitors and delegates tasks to licensed or unlicensed teammates and provides training.

Assists teammates with nursing care and delivers direct patient care as needed.

May act as team leader or charge nurse.

Completes continuing education, professional development, and in‑service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements.

Guides professional growth of others through precepting, role modeling, coaching, and mentoring.

Responds appropriately in emergency situations.

Keeps leadership informed of problems or concerns.

Participates in performance‑improvement activities, departmental committees, and projects.

Promotes a safe, clean environment.

Maintains professional demeanor, high standards of customer service, teamwork, and offers solutions to problems.

Education

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Licensure / Certification

Current Registered Nurse Licensure in North Carolina.

Competent in BLS and/or other specialized life‑support certifications as required.

Additional certifications may be required by department.

Experience At least one year of experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice and procedures.

Ability to apply the nursing process appropriately.

Ability to assess the nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients.

Ability to work independently within scope of practice and collaboratively.

Good interpersonal and customer‑service skills.

Proficiency with EMR/Epic and rapid learning of new software.

Ability to stand, walk and meet the physical job requirements for the duration of shift.
