Work collaboratively with staff radiologists to perform advanced diagnostic ultrasound procedures in accordance with safety procedures and protocols. Serve as a clinical mentor for junior staff and students.

Key Responsibilities

Verify physician orders and procedures to ensure accuracy.

Use radiology information systems to facilitate care.

Explain procedures to patients to ensure understanding.

Independently operate equipment to complete imaging procedures according to protocol, including assisting radiologists in guided procedures in a variety of settings.

Review patient images prior to transmission to ensure diagnostic quality standards.

Complete timely quality control procedures in accordance with regulatory standards and perform notification/remediation as warranted.

Assist in the facilitation of departmental operations (inventory, staff schedules, equipment maintenance, etc.).

Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, respecting privacy and communication style.

Perform other related duties as required.

Education

Completion of a CAHEA approved formal training program in diagnostic medical sonography.

Work Experience

None required.

Preferred: 2 years of sonographer experience.

Certifications

Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) or registry eligible (required within 1 year of hire).

Advanced certification in area(s) of specialty according to facility need.

Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Proficiency in using computers, software, and web‑based applications.

Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.

Knowledge of the anatomy of the liver, gallbladder, aorta, spleen, kidneys, bile ducts, and pancreas and ability to perform abdominal ultrasound and pathology of these organs to provide radiologists with a preliminary diagnosis.

Ability to work a flexible schedule (e.g., 24/7, weekend, holiday, on-call availability).

Physical and Environmental Demands Medium work—exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Exposure to blood, body fluid, tissue, and communicable diseases is routine. Occupational risk for hazardous medications or waste may exist. This role requires working in patient care areas, entering patient rooms, and working directly with patients or specimens.
