Would I make a good fit? Do you love working outdoors with a lot of variety in your workday? Parks of the St. Lawrence is looking for energetic and enthusiastic individuals to carry out the duties of an Assistant Park Ranger.
What can I expect to do in this role?
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Parks Operations Manager, support in leading and coordinate the day-to-day park operations, including administrative, maintenance, and cleaning functions, such as scheduling, assigning work, monitoring, and auditing work performance.
Train, supervise and identify performance and misconduct issues for seasonal staff and students, advising management of any issues.
Oversee the park enforcement program, respond to emergencies, and ensure staff follow proper security procedures to ensure the safety of visitors and staff.
On occasion, assist with special events or supporting other campgrounds, as directed by the Parks Management Team.
Lead and coordinate all aspects of store concessions and oversee the supervision, tracking, and operation of retail and canteen concessions.
Embody the SLPC’s equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests.
How do I qualify? Mandatory
You have the ability to be designated as a Provincial Offences Officer and meet certification criteria and standards to be designated as an Officer.
You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognised by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence.
You possess or have the ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certification.
You possess or have the ability to obtain Smart Serve certification.
You possess or have the ability to obtain Safe Food Handling certification.
A willingness to work variable shifts including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.
Pool Operator Certification is an asset at certain Park locations.
Knowledge and Experience
You possess knowledge of park operations (day-use, campground, beaches, and registration).
You possess knowledge of resource management practices and ability to interpret and enforce legislation applicable to park management (e.g., St. Lawrence Parks Commission Act and associated regulations, Trespass to Property Act, and the Occupational Health & Safety Act).
Knowledge of park enforcement functions, corresponding legislation, and regulations to ensure staff follow proper security procedures.
Knowledge and experience with grounds and buildings maintenance, general construction, and trails maintenance, and semi-skilled tasks usually associated with skilled trades such as carpentry, plumbing and electrical.
Ability to operate and maintain and perform minor repairs to a variety of light powered equipment (e.g. chainsaws, brush cutters, lawnmowers, utility terrain vehicles (UTV), tractors and small hand tools).
Knowledge of store concessions to oversee the supervision, tracking and operation of retail concessions.
Ability to promote, foster and support a safe working environment for all staff that includes working in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, its regulations, and the Employer’s occupational health and safety policies, procedures, and guidelines when performing supervisory responsibilities.
Communication Skills and Interpersonal Skills
Well developed communication skills to effectively develop and manage relationships with staff, volunteers, visitors, service providers and enforce park rules and regulations.
Excellent communication skills (oral and written) to prepare reports and correspondence regarding park operations and respond to customer inquiries and complaints tactfully and with discretion, in a timely manner as directed by Parks Management Team.
Leadership and Organizational Skills
Proven leadership, interpersonal and team building skills to provide leadership, monitor performance and promote excellence in customer service and team performance.
The ability to motivate, train and work as a team member.
Proven supervisory skills to lead the day-to-day operations and ensure park operational needs are met.
The ability to oversee and coordinate the staging of special events.
Judgment and Decision-Making Skills
Strong judgement, decision-making, and critical thinking skills to identify and analyze operational issues and challenges and provide recommendations and implement solutions.
The ability to plan, develop and lead park operations by identifying priorities, setting targets, determining objectives, and coordinating resources.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently and use good judgement to follow and carry out instructions, manage emergencies and identify/solve problems and determine the appropriate course of action.
Administrative, Financial and Computer Skills
Knowledge of computer software and administrative procedures to manage the daily operations of the park.
Cash handling and mathematical skills to process sales and reservations, review balance receipts and shift summaries, and complete deposits.
