Position Summary The Value Chain Optimization (VCO) team has an opening for a South Region Planning & Optimization Engineer. This role reports through the VCO organization to the South Region Planning Director. The successful candidate will work closely with the Value Chain members to optimize the profitability of the South value chain. This individual will gain a more holistic perspective of Marathon profitability and engage in cross‑functional interaction with the Clean Products team, Crude and Feedstocks teams, Marketing, Refining, and MPLX. The candidate will also broaden their knowledge base concerning Gulf Coast market dynamics and total value chain optimization. Key characteristics for success include communication, critical thinking, drive for results, and adaptability.

Key Responsibilities

Coordinates the commercial aspects of refinery operations, including feedstock selection, product and intermediate placement, supply chain optimization, and market analysis.

Demonstrates a fundamental understanding of refinery operations, economics, and market dynamics. Develops and communicates strategies that capture missed opportunities and closes production optimization gaps.

Assists in collaboration meetings with the value chain to discuss both local and regional economic drivers.

Develops optimized and executable production plans for refineries using linear programming simulation models. Modifies production plans as needed to adjust to demand/margin changes. Identifies constraints associated with refinery modeling, uses provided input to develop refinery plans.

Conducts detailed analysis of buy‑or‑make options, considering factors such as cost, quality, supply chain implications, and market dynamics. Collaborates with cross‑functional teams to gather relevant data and insights.

Assists in developing decision‑making frameworks and presenting findings to stakeholders.

Analyzes historical refinery data to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement. Collaborates with cross‑functional teams to validate data accuracy and completeness. Assists in developing back‑cast models and scenarios to evaluate past performance and identify optimization opportunities.

Demonstrates understanding of refinery operations and commercial aspects of projects. Able to analyze data, identify issues, and propose solutions with guidance.

Provides LP support in the development and justification of capital projects.

Uses LP to develop long‑term business plan for South region.

Builds out turnaround cases in the LP 1 year+ ahead of time and identifies opportunities to optimize around them.

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.

Four (4) years relevant experience. Technical Services or Economics & Planning experience preferred.

Location & Relocation Location: Houston, TX, Galveston Bay Refinery, TX, Garyville Refinery, LA. Relocation: Available. Estimated travel: ~25%.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.

Four (4) years relevant experience. Technical Services or Economics & Planning experience preferred.
