Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

United States Citizenship : Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree : Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

License : Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.

Residency Training : Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification (ACGME, AOA, or other qualifying programs).

Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) : Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training and otherwise meeting the basic requirements may be appointed as PRPs on an intermittent or fee basis.

Proficiency in English : Spoken and written.

Preferred Experience : Board certification in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Family Practice.

Emergency Department Patient Care Experience

Prior Leadership Experience : At the section level or higher.

Physical Requirements : Pre‑employment examination or evaluation as part of the hiring process.

Duties

Advocate for a Whole Health System of care within the VA Midwest Health Care Network.

Provide direct patient care in the Emergency Department, including evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and coordination of care for urgent and emergent conditions.

Perform history and physical exams; order and interpret diagnostic tests; initiate and adjust medications; maintain proficiency in emergency procedures (e.g., EKG interpretation).

Complete timely documentation in CPRS, including progress notes, clinical reminders, and electronic encounters.

Oversee all administrative and leadership functions of the Emergency Department.

Supervise ED clinicians – recruitment, retention, and performance evaluations (FPPE/OPPE).

Serve as the clinical lead for quality and safety initiatives within the service line.

Collaborate with inpatient wards, Primary Care PACT teams, specialty services, and non‑VA facilities for admissions, transfers, and continuity of care.

Coordinate emergency medical care and facilitate communication between mental health ancillary clinics and community partners.

May provide occupational health services, including physicals and treatment of employee injuries.

Participate in quality improvement activities, policy development, and staff education.

Compensation and Benefits

Base pay range: $300,000 – $400,000 per year.

Competitive salary and bonuses.

Paid time off: 50–55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays, +5 days paid CME absence).

Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution.
