The Veterinary Technician plays a key role in advancing the goals of APA!’s Clinic Team. This is a hands-on, mission-driven role focused on results, reliability, and teamwork. The Veterinary Technician works across clinic roles including Wellness Technician, Emergency Technician, Hospital/Onsite Technician, and Prescription Technician, and may assist in high-volume spay/neuter surgeries. This is a full-time, nonexempt position reporting to the Medical Clinic Manager or their designee. Responsibilities
Actively contribute to a volunteer-powered culture by partnering with volunteers during every shift and helping create an inclusive, welcoming environment Work alongside volunteers to complete daily tasks, ensuring the work is shared and collaborative—not siloed Support recruitment and onboarding of volunteers; welcome new volunteers and help them orient to the program Help retain volunteers by offering encouragement, guidance, and feedback; recognize volunteer contributions Explain tasks to volunteers, provide hands-on guidance, and offer in-the-moment support Level 0.5 and Level 1 – Typical duties
Complete hospitalized treatment, from beginning to end, at any complexity level Manage wellness appointment schedules; follow technician protocols independently Understand x-ray positioning and terminology; perform radiographs with assistance Administer vaccines and medications per APA! Medical Protocols; maintain records Perform blood draws, diagnostics, and basic microscopy; document results in EMR Administer injections (SQ, IM, IV), and handle medications per protocols Able to train for non-surgical roles and to work toward Level 1 responsibilities Provide excellent customer service to clients and foster/adopters Wellness and Emergency Technician roles
Wellness Technician: provide vaccines, preventatives, intakes, and related care for scheduled clinic clients; maintain records and communicate with fosters/adopters Emergency Technician: provide time-efficient medical care for offsite, emergency, and urgent cases; triage and communicate with stakeholders Other Level 2/3 roles
Hospitalized/Onsite Technician: manage treatment, meds, intake, and coordination for hospitalized animals Prescription Technician: fill prescriptions accurately and communicate with caregivers Level 2 and Level 3: perform triage, radiographs, anesthesia support, surgeries, and lead training Required Qualifications
Preferred 6 months of veterinary technician experience; customer-facing experience acceptable Proficiency in standard veterinary technician skills: restraint, blood draws, diagnostics, injections, catheter placement Moderate to expert veterinary pharmacy knowledge; ability to transcribe veterinarian notes Ability to work independently in a busy environment; valid driver’s license desired for occasional transport Expectations
