Financial Aid Advisor - Veteran Services

The Blinn College District is searching for a Financial Aid Advisor - Veteran Services at our Bryan Campus. Primary Duties and Responsibilities are listed below:

Job Summary Serves as an assigned advisor within the Financial Aid/Scholarships and Veteran Services Office. To assist in the administration of need-based financial aid programs at Blinn College. To provide direct service to students, their families, interested third parties and college employees in regard to financial aid applications, eligibility and awards.

Principal Accountabilities

Counsel veteran students on options and availability of funds for all active chapters of the G.I. Bill and State benefits. Provides information and guidance in the areas of Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) educational benefits and eligibility, educational objectives, and degree/vocational opportunities; assists students in applying for a wide variety of DVA programs; certifying enrollment. School Certifying Official.

Interprets and applies federal and state regulations to all aspects of student aid programs, and specializes in veterans student aid. Process Hazlewood benefits. Report data to Texas Veterans Commission according to reporting regulations.

Prepares and reviews appropriate documentation necessary for certification of students' veterans' educational entitlements to DVA educational benefits. Monitors veteran students' academic progress, course enrollment, and other reporting requirements to DVA.

Uses discretion and independent judgment to advise and counsel students, parents, and/or prospective students in solving their educational financial problems through scholarships, loans, grants, employment, and financial counseling. Responds to questions and counseling needs in-person and by written, phone, and email means from currently enrolled students, prospective students and parents. Assists outreach staff with prospective students and in their transition to current Blinn students.

Makes presentations to parent and student groups on and off campus regarding veteran educational benefits and Financial Aid.

Performs other related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Required Degree, License or Certifications

Bachelor's Degree or a combination of education and direct experience.

A VA certifying official or the ability to obtain certification.

Valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain.

Minimum Competencies

Ability to communicate clearly and thoroughly with people of various backgrounds and experiences in a way that they feel comfortable.

Ability to travel to all Blinn College locations and to any necessary outside trainings.

Computer literate.

Strong analytical and organization skills combined with careful attention to detail.

Self-motivated and goal-oriented, team player.

Strong commitment to quality customer service for our veterans.

Ability to handle numerous complex and routine tasks simultaneously.

Ability to maintain the confidentiality of college records and student information.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience processing federal VA education benefits and the Hazlewood Exemption Act.

Financial aid experience at an institution of higher education.

Experience with Banner or Ellucian products.

Preferred Competencies

Microsoft Office experience.

Customer service experience.

Special Notes To Applicants This is a 12 month, benefits eligible position. Blinn College pays 100% of health insurance for full time employees, 50% for dependents, and two times your annual salary in life insurance benefits. Optional coverages can begin on your first active duty date. Leave time includes 96 hours vacation, 40 hours discretionary and 16 hours personal each year and 8 hours sick each month.
