Position Overview

The Peer Specialist is an integral member of Allwel’s behavioral health team, providing Empowerment and Peer Support Services as part of New York State’s Community Oriented Recovery and Empowerment (CORE) service array. This position is designed for individuals with lived experience of recovery from mental health or substance use challenges who can use that experience to empower, guide, and support others on their own recovery journeys. The Peer Specialist provides mobile, community-based support; meeting individuals where they live, work, learn, and socialize to promote recovery, independence, and community integration. The role requires a high level of autonomy, professionalism, and self-direction, as services are delivered in the field and documentation must meet managed care and state standards. Key Responsibilities

Direct Peer Support

Deliver Empowerment Services – Peer Support in accordance with NYS CORE standards. Use lived experience to inspire hope, foster resilience, and model recovery-oriented behaviors. Support individuals in setting and achieving recovery goals through person-centered planning and shared decision-making.

Advocacy & Skill Development

Assist participants in navigating systems related to housing, benefits, healthcare, and employment. Help individuals identify and access natural supports, community resources, and peer-run programs. Promote independence by teaching skills for daily living, community participation, and goal attainment.

Community Integration

Facilitate engagement in meaningful activities that enhance community inclusion and social connection. Accompany participants to community appointments and activities as needed, promoting confidence and empowerment.

Crisis & Transitional Support

Provide pre-crisis and post-crisis peer support, emphasizing de-escalation and stabilization through non-clinical interventions. Offer transitional assistance for individuals moving from inpatient, detox, or residential care back into the community.

Documentation & Coordination

Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with CORE and Medicaid requirements, including progress notes and Individual Service Plans (ISPs). Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and coordinate with clinical and non-clinical providers to ensure integrated care.

Qualifications

Required New York State Certified Peer Specialist (NYCPS or NYCPS-P) or Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA). Lived experience of recovery from mental health and/or substance use challenges. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a community-based environment and manage time effectively.
