Assistant Project Manager
Independence Excavating is looking for a driven and ambitious Assistant Project Manager to join our Cleveland Team! As an Assistant Project Manager, you will assist in the day-to-day project administrative and management needs. You will assist the Project Manager and Superintendent with purchase orders, subcontracts, RFI’s, submittals, job costs and projections. This position will grow into a Project Management role in the future.

A typical day looks like:
Reading, understanding and interpreting drawings and specifications
Preparing and analyzing project schedules
Review site safety, security, and maintenance of traffic and storm water pollution plans
Making sure that required permits are obtained
Making a detailed list of subcontracts and purchase orders along with contacts for Superintendents prior to the start of the job
Coordinating construction activities with local officials (engineering, service dept, fire, police, zoning, etc.) to keep Independence in good standing with the local government and residents
Preparing, reviewing and returning submittals for items to be manufactured or provided
Assembling job cost codes for projects and regularly update
Preparing monthly detailed Payment Requisitions for submission to owners
Working with Superintendent to determine equipment & crew needs
Coordinating Subcontractors and material deliveries on major items
Holding progress meetings with the Owner and Subcontractors
Making sure that Superintendents, Subcontractors and Suppliers receive amended drawings and specifications as well as a working contact list for the project
Preparing change order requests or extra work to be presented to the owner, and review with project team prior to being sent out.
Developing positive working relationships with Owners and Project Engineers
Reviewing and approving Subcontractor / Supplier estimates & invoices
Responsibility for ensuring that company maintains profit margin on job
Visiting projects regularly to stay up on current issues and progress
Other duties as assigned
Do you have what it takes?
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or construction management or an equivalent combination of education and experience
3+ years’ experience working in heavy highway construction preferred
2+ years’ in an Assistant Project Manager role and/or Project Engineer role
Experience in a construction management software; HCSS, Primavera, P6 Scheduling experience a plus
Must have strong organizational skills in order to handle the variety of tasks assigned
Must develop positive working relationships with owners and project engineers as well as local government offices
Demonstrated ability to manage people, budget, schedule, and quality of work at multiple construction sites
Must be competent to perform complete and accurate project take-offs and estimates
Must be willing and able to travel up to 30%
