Primary Purpose Works under direct supervision to learn the proper handling of all specimens received at ARUP's central facility and/or University Hospital Clinical Lab, and prepares specimens for laboratory testing. Responsibilities include matching patient information, data entry, aliquoting, and scanning documents.
Essential Functions
Read and sign the Specimen Processing Procedure Manual and Safety Manual.
Attend Specimen Processing team and staff meetings.
Be assigned to a POD upon successful completion of Specimen Processing training.
Immediately process specimens as they become available.
Enter patient demographics and process specimens/orders using the appropriate applications.
Order all tests indicated on the requisition.
Process all manual and electronically transmitted tests on submitted paperwork.
Properly comment any additional information on the requisition or packing list.
Look for any problems and order exceptional tests as necessary.
Handle and label all specimens and paperwork appropriately.
Recognize and handle all specimen types per corporate and departmental procedure.
Properly document all specimen receipt information as outlined in departmental procedures.
Ensure all appropriate identifiers are checked on all received specimens and paperwork, both electronically and physically, and that they match.
Handle specimens requiring a reroute or that need to be shared.
Place processed specimens on the automated track, or at the appropriate temperature for manual sorting, or deliver to the testing laboratory at the proper temperature if automated delivery systems are not available.
Process specimens at all three temperatures and follow the appropriate procedures for all manual and electronically transmitted orders.
Operate the biological safety cabinet properly.
(University Hospital Clinical Lab only) Operate the centrifuge properly.
Proficient in ARUP applications: Accessioning, Checkout, Inquiry, and Shipment Tracking.
Proficient in the Internal Test Directory (ITD) as related to accessioning and client submissions/inquiries.
Proficient in all current departmental LIS applications and functions.
Aliquot specimens according to procedure using the proper safety equipment.
(University Hospital) Correctly prepare specimens for delivery between ARUP testing facilities, create STLs, package according to specimen temperature, and operate the centrifuge.
Know ARUP and UHSC laboratories and be able to determine their locations, hours of operation, and general functions.
Make sound judgment decisions or checks with a supervisor, lead, or workflow coordinator when needed before making decisions.
Assist the management team in handling more complex processing needs, including specimen searches and processing compromised shipments when needed.
Observe principles of data security and patient confidentiality; maintain ethical standards in all interactions.
Adhere to all safety policies and regulations, including proper dress code and protective equipment use.
Remain informed of all procedures pertaining to specimen processing.
Perform cleaning duties as assigned.
Assist with departmental projects.
Other duties as assigned.
Physical and Other Requirements
Stooping: bending the body downward and forward at the waist.
Reaching: extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Mobility: moving between work sites and within the office to access file cabinets and machinery.
PPE: use of personal protective equipment in a biohazard laboratory environment per CDC, OSHA, and ARUP policies.
ARUP Policies and Procedures: conduct work in compliance with all ARUP policies and procedures.
Code of Conduct: abide by the code outlined in the ARUP employee handbook.
Medium Work: exert up to 50 lbs occasionally, up to 30 lbs frequently, and up to 10 lbs constantly to move objects.
Fine Motor Control: picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers.
Vision: adequate close, far, and peripheral visual acuity for task observation.
Color Vision: perception and ability to distinguish colors.
Performance Expectations: regular and reliable attendance, dependable performance, teamwork, and ability to work required overtime.
Qualifications Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent, or higher in a related field.
Experience:
Type speed 30 words per minute.
Preferred: one year of data entry experience.
Preferred: one year of laboratory experience.
