Reports To: Principal and/or Assistant Principal

Takes Direction From: ESL Teacher, ESL Department Chair, and/or ESL District Coordinator

Schedule/Calendar: Elementary – 5 hours/day, 25 hours/week, 172 days/year

Essential Functions

Provides students with introductory, supportive and/or supplemental instruction, and remediation and/or reinforcement of English language skills under the direction of the English Language Decelopment (ELD) teacher (previously known as ESL teacher)

Confers regularly with the classroom teacher to share student progress and to plan for future needs

Works with the classroom teacher to provide ESL students with accommodations and modifications to the regular classroom curricula

Helps train new ELD personnel in daily responsibilities

Works with students on preparation of special assignments, projects, tests and finals

Helps administer classroom or district-level tests

Additional duties as assigned by supervisor

Education and/or Certification Required

Associate's degree or 2 years of higher education

Teaching or teaching assistant experience preferred

Experience Needed

Experience working with children and/or young adults

Knowledge of the English language

Desire to work with children or young adults

Requisite Skills

Ability to communicate the English language to students who speak English as a second language

Ability to work with a range of diverse personalities

Ability to work in a variety of working conditions

Ability to help bridge the communication gap between parents, students, and the school

Ability to motivate students to work independently

Ability to support a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion

Physical Requirements Sedentary: involves sitting most of the time. Incumbent should be able to exert up to 10 lbs of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects.

Light work: If the use of arm and/or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the individual sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work. The incumbent should be able to exert up to 20 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Medium work: The incumbent should be able to exert up to 50 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs of force constantly to move objects.

Heavy work: The incumbent should be able to exert up to 100 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects.

Very heavy work: The incumbent should be able to exert in excess of 100 lbs of force occasionally, and in excess of 50 lbs of force frequently, and in excess of 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
