General Summary The Risk Manager is responsible for managing assigned accounts and product lines in determining appropriate product offerings and underwriting guidelines. The role partners with the Sales Organization, brokers and internal partners to evaluate business opportunities that require risk and underwriting guidelines outside normal product guidelines, assessing specific account, enrollment methods and business segment characteristics for new accounts or modified guidelines. The position analyzes, manages and implements underwriting guidelines for new product development, broker and alliance blocks of business, monitors product line performance, develops strong sales relationships and mentors underwriters on risk theories and monitoring techniques.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Contribute to corporate growth and profitability through timely and accurate evaluation of risk and establishment of sound underwriting practices at the account and segment level.
Determine risk selection at the account level for underwriting concessions of group and individual product lines, implementing and communicating all updated risk selections.
Monitor current underwriting and renewal strategies, balancing top‑line and bottom‑line growth consistent with risk characteristics and long‑term strategy.
Work with Underwriting Management to ensure appropriate measures support best risk‑management practices.
Partner with Actuarial to evaluate underperforming product experience on an annual or other basis, recommending, negotiating, implementing and monitoring necessary risk changes at the account level.
Understand group and individual product lines in depth, including policy parameters, enrollment methods and operational system supports company‑wide.
Partner with the Sales Organization to understand marketing opportunities and position product offerings deliverable by the Home Office.
Facilitate brokers in offering profitable and deliverable products.
Ensure product offerings outside normal guidelines align with “best” practices pertaining to Account Services/Client Success, Claims and Underwriting guidelines.
Evaluate business opportunities that may require risk and underwriting guidelines outside normal product guidelines with Sales Organization and Account Management.
Communicate risk‑management theories and sound field underwriting practices to Sales Organization.
Coordinate with Product Marketing, Actuarial and Underwriting departments to develop appropriate underwriting guidelines for assigned products.
Document underwriting practices on specific products, ensuring proper documentation for training staff and management.
Monitor competitive environment and communicate trends and potential solutions to remain competitive in underwriting practices.
Identify market trends, develop and implement responses partnering with internal peers.
Participate in application development and policy form review during product design and filing process for assigned product lines.
Partner with Compliance and Legal departments to address application and legal issues.
May perform other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications
College degree or significant industry experience.
Understanding of Unum/Colonial Life’s underwriting, marketing and risk philosophy.
Extensive knowledge of Unum/Colonial Life’s individual and group product lines.
In‑depth product knowledge and demonstrated ability to apply concepts to make appropriate risk decisions.
Extensive knowledge of external voluntary market competitors.
Strong initiative and ability to execute.
Strong multitasking capabilities.
Works well under pressure and can manage multiple and changing priorities.
Deadline oriented.
Excellent negotiation and influencing skills.
Strong decision‑making abilities.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to travel approximately 5% to position underwriting offerings and other risk opportunities with sales organization.

The base salary range for this position is
$63,500–$120,000 . Actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
