The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs approximately 2,700 staff and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations across New Jersey. This includes planning and construction, facilities, public safety, environmental health, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.
Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Operating Engineer I for IP&O.
Under the direction of the Manager of Engineering, the incumbent will be responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of cogeneration power and heating plants and auxiliary equipment entrusted to their care.
Responsibilities
Operate, maintain turbine generators, stationary steam boilers, and auxiliary equipment in the Busch Central Heating Plant.
Perform minor and emergency repairs on generators, motors, pumps, turbines, vacuum units, blowers, refrigeration equipment, cooling towers, gas compressors, air compressors, chemical treatment systems, continuous emission monitoring systems, and other auxiliary equipment.
Conduct comprehensive tests and record readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperatures, steam flow, and other relevant parameters.
Receive, store, safeguard, and record the use of equipment, materials, and supplies. Maintain an up‑to‑date inventory system and follow all operational procedures.
Add chemicals to treat steam, water, and fuel in accordance with prescribed requirements.
Complete all paperwork promptly; maintain logs, records, and files for the Power Plants.
Exchange detailed information with relieving operators.
Inspect equipment continuously, using knowledge of plant layout, and identify alternate ways to maintain continuous operation.
Analyze problems, determine causes and effects, take corrective action when necessary, and report conditions to the Manager of Engineering.
Ensure compliance with all regulations.
Remain available for all power emergencies.
Keep work area clean and neat.
Train and familiarize new employees in the operation and routine of the Power Plant.

Salary Details Minimum Salary: $38,100
Mid Range Salary: $38,600
Maximum Salary: $39,760
