UNIT SUMMARY: 4 Chest is a 37-bed acute surgical unit and is comprised of 3 distinct units: Thoracic Surgery; Head and Neck Cancer; and, our level two Surgical Step-Down Unit. As the Regional Centre for both Thoracic Surgery and Head and Neck Cancer, 4 Chest offers a depth and wealth of learning opportunities.

We support the care of patients with newly diagnosed disease including thoracic (e.g., lung, esophageal), head and neck cancer, and reconstructive plastic surgery. Our 8-bed, Level 2 Surgical Stepdown Unit provides care for critically ill surgical patients including those who have undergone Thoracic, Orthopedic, Urology, Gynecology, Vascular, GI and General Surgical procedures.

Together, 4 Chest provides exemplary care in a cohesive, collaborative and integrated manner. As a part of an academic centre, the team supports and participates in ongoing research, quality improvement and inter‑professional activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario

Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers

Recent medical‑surgical nursing experience preferred

Critical care certificate an asset

Demonstrated excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills

Demonstrated effective organizational skills involving time management and prioritization

Demonstrated initiative and ability to work both independently and as an effective team member

Ability to function in a changing fast‑paced environment

Demonstrated commitment to professional development and self‑directed learning

Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family‑centred care

Good attendance and work record are essential
