Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose Responsible for the development, design, and deployment of new automation systems. The role includes concept generation, personally designing, building, and programming testbeds to validate core concepts, specifying system architecture and design criteria, and working with engineering specialists and outside suppliers to design and deliver systems into manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities

Engage stakeholders to identify needs for automation and advanced machinery

Lead small technical teams, often as part of a larger team

Generate, review, and select concepts

Design, assemble and debug prototypes to prove out concepts

Perform engineering analysis and fundamental understanding to select automation techniques, methods, mechanical and electrical hardware, and algorithms

Collaborate with specialists familiar with large-scale design in areas such as mechanical and electrical engineering, software, motion, optics, and machine vision

Provide detail project results through periodic internal reports and presentations for review by peers, customers, and managers

Debug, test and lead resolution of design or manufacturing issues

Be an advocate and role model for safety across all interactions within Corning. Ensure all work is performed in a safe manner and environment. Responsible for own safety, as well as that of others that may be at the facility, whether working or visiting

Document inventions of all novel designs

Required Education

BS in Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering or some other relevant field of study

2-4 years engineering experience

Comfortable engaging with team members in a wide variety of roles to collect, gain agreement on and present requirements and approaches

Strong interest in machine design

Competent at object‑oriented programming in at least one C‑based language

Ability or interest in learning industrial controls and machine vision

Multi-disciplinary engineering analysis

Ability to write clear documents, including text and diagrams

Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint

Desired Experiences

MS in Mechanical Engineering, Software or some other relevant field of study

Knowledge of materials handling and automated assembly

Mechanical Design in SolidWorks

Electrical or electronics design

Motion Control

Basic optics and opto‑mechanics

Machine vision design

Strong in mathematics or physics

MATLAB and/or Python

Some systems engineering training

The range for this position is $81,561.00 - $112,147.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job‑related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
