Schedule: 36 hrs - Weekend Day Coverage 7a-7p Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Overview Provides support in obtaining and maintaining vascular access in pediatric patients. This includes placing peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) and difficult peripheral intravenous catheters (PIV), teaching staff and families about various vascular access options, changing/troubleshooting central line dressings, and maintaining a PICC database.

Essential Functions

Insert PICC lines, including assessment, education, collaboration with medical team about sedation, sterile technique, ultrasound guidance, documentation, and follow‑up.

Insert PIVs, including prompt response to consult, attempts on patients with extensive medical histories, use of assistive devices, and documentation.

Care for and troubleshoot PIVs and central lines: assessments, dressing changes/cap changes, administration of Alteplase (TPA), education to patients/families, weekly rounds with CNS/Educator, serving as a consultant to enhance bedside RN skills.

Maintain database and keep current knowledge on vascular access: accurate data entry, data review for improvement, participation in performance improvement, data collection for NDNQI, review national standards/regulations, support research/publication, systematic analysis, dissemination of new knowledge.

Demonstrate clinical leadership: serve as clinical/systems expert, collaborate proactively, implement nursing process, function as liaison, seek guidance, emphasize teamwork, engage in professional growth, improve systems, recommend improvements.

Accept assignments to share/teach knowledge, provide clinical support as a preceptor, mentor student nurse observation experience.

Education Qualifications

Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in nursing – Required

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in nursing – Preferred

Experience Qualifications

Minimum of 1 year of RN experience – Required

1–3 years ICU experience – Preferred

Skills And Abilities

Perform a variety of duties efficiently and with composure under stressful conditions while prioritizing tasks.

Demonstrate situational power, control, autonomy and flexibility.

Show proficiency in verbal/written communication, time management, problem solving and knowledge of regulatory agency standards.

Licenses and Certifications

RN – State licensure and/or Compact State licensure – Required at hire

BLS – Basic Life Support – Required at hire

PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support – Required within 180 days

VABC – Vascular Access Board Certified – Required within 3 years

Current valid certification in Critical Care, Emergency, or Pediatric Nursing – Preferred
