Job Summary Under the general direction of the school principal, and under the immediate supervision of a teacher holding a valid state certificate directly engaged in teaching, the assistant supports instruction and related duties in a classroom setting.

Responsibilities

Assists in the supervision of students during lunchroom and playground activities.

Provides security functions within the school, including monitoring corridors and reviewing student identification cards.

Assists students in understanding and completing classroom assignments.

Assists teachers in preparing bulletin boards and displaying student work.

Operates photocopying and duplicating machines and audiovisual equipment.

Maintains orderly arrangement of classroom materials.

Greets and directs visitors and consults with teachers regarding concerns of individual students.

Provides tutoring services under teacher supervision.

Assists in collecting and grading students’ homework assignments and examination materials.

Assists in supervising the loading and unloading of students on school buses.

Assists in receipt, processing, and issuance of new books.

Collects daily classroom absentee reports and contacts parents/guardians to verify causes of student absences.

May assist elementary school teachers with wraps and toilet recesses as necessary.

Assists in supervising the school procedure for selling public transportation passes to students.

COVID-19 Related Responsibilities

Communicates with families of quarantined students about expectations and instruction access.

Assists students/families with secure devices and troubleshooting technology issues.

Coordinates logistical details of remote instruction for quarantined students, including schedules and Google Meets setup.

Provides supervision of in‑person student learning when a teacher is teaching remotely and absent for COVID‑related reasons.

Coordinates student COVID testing logistics: scheduling test administration, supervising students while they wait for tests, promoting testing consents, and notifying families.

Promotes student and family vaccination opportunities, including parent reminders, onsite mobile vaccination events, and scheduling second dose appointments.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or G.E.D. equivalent with at least six months experience in an educational setting, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

Good knowledge of English grammar and spelling, basic mathematics, and CPS rules and regulations.

Ability to work with and for school‑aged children and to follow written and oral instructions.

Ability to operate basic office equipment and to communicate effectively with the public.

Good oral and written communication skills; reading proficiency; proficiency with audio‑visual equipment and personal computers is highly desirable.

Conditions of Employment

Must establish and maintain Chicago residency within six months of hire and throughout employment.

Must be fully vaccinated against COVID‑19 within 30 days of hire (at least two weeks after the final dose).
