Who We Are At the Cruelty Recovery Center (CRC) in Columbus, Ohio, a dedicated team of sheltering, veterinary and animal behavior staff work together to care for animals rescued in ASPCA national cruelty cases and disaster responses. The CRC team collaborates closely with multiple ASPCA national teams to ensure coordinated, high‑quality care for animal victims of neglect, abuse, and natural disasters.

What You’ll Do Veterinarians at CRC will play a critical role in ensuring high‑quality care and timely treatment decisions for all animals. You will collaborate with senior leadership and other CRC veterinarians to provide care on‑site and support the Forensics Sciences team in examining, documenting, and collecting evidence from victims of animal cruelty. Your day will blend on‑site animal care with field operations work, based on current needs.

When & Where You’ll Work

Based in Columbus, OH at the ASPCA Cruelty Recovery Center.

Able to travel regularly, up to 20% of work time, with little advance notice.

Work flexible hours, long days, and weekends as required.

What You’ll Get Compensation

Target hiring range: $123,000–$136,000 annually.

Eligible for a signing bonus and/or relocation assistance.

Responsibilities

Provide timely, high‑quality veterinary care to dogs, cats, and other species.

Monitor the shelter population for disease outbreaks and implement mitigation measures.

Diagnose and treat patients, coordinating with external veterinary partners as needed.

Complete veterinary inspection certificates for animal transfers.

Perform sterilization, soft‑tissue surgeries, dental extractions, and humane euthanasia.

Manage intensive‑care in‑house patients and conduct field case responses.

Support forensic evidence collection and documentation, and testify as an expert witness when required.

Obtain and maintain continuing education credits and clinical certifications.

Collaborate with sheltering, behavior, criminal investigations, and forensic teams to share information and ensure animal welfare.

Communicate results to staff and stakeholders, producing medical documentation and administrative reports.

Assist in staff training, mentor externs, and provide feedback on medical protocols.

Model low‑stress handling techniques and maintain high standards of care.

Education and Work Experience

Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (required).

Licensed in Ohio; eligible for other state licenses.

Minimum 2 years of clinical experience with dogs and cats.

Experience with poultry, horses, and other species preferred.

Clinical shelter medicine experience or advanced training strongly preferred.

Forensic experience and disaster response experience preferred.

Fear Free certification within 60 days of employment.

ICS structure experience preferred, with specific training certifications.

Additional Qualifications

Strong clinical judgement and resilience for end‑of‑life decisions.

Comfortable with humane euthanasia.

Ability to observe animal suffering medically and/or behaviorally.

Excellent low‑stress handling and restraint skills.

Critical thinking, multitasking, and flexibility in shifting priorities.

Confidentiality skills for criminal cases.

Strong workplace relationships, collaboration, and leadership abilities.

Proficient in Microsoft Office; familiarity with Salesforce or shelter software a plus.

Physical ability to lift 50 pounds, stand 8+ hours, and work in challenging conditions.
