Position Summary The Surgical (Scrub) Technologist plays a critical role in ensuring patient safety, maintaining sterile technique, and supporting exceptional surgical outcomes. This position works collaboratively with surgeons, nurses, and clinical staff to prepare and maintain the operating room environment while delivering a high standard of patient care and professionalism consistent with Athenix clinical standards.
Key Responsibilities
Arrive on time for scheduled shifts, prepared to support surgical cases and clinical operations
Prepare and assist with operating room setup in accordance with Athenix clinical and safety standards
Perform pre-operative and post-operative patient care tasks as directed
Assist the OR Nurse with sterilization techniques and preparation of sterile supplies for procedures
Maintain aseptic technique at all times, including proper sterilization and handling of instruments
Select, prepare, and arrange sterile instruments and equipment appropriate to each procedure
Scrub, gown, and glove appropriately; assist other team members with sterile attire as needed
Assist with patient positioning, draping, and intraoperative support
Anticipate surgeon and procedural needs, ensuring supplies and instruments are readily available
Pass instruments, hold retractors, cut sutures, and perform other tasks as directed during surgery
Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments before and after procedures
Properly label, handle, and care for surgical specimens when applicable
Apply dressings following procedures as directed
Clean and reset operating rooms between cases and perform terminal sterilization per manufacturer and CDC guidelines
Maintain a clean, safe, fully stocked, and organized operating room environment
Communicate promptly with management regarding any patient or staff concerns outside the scope of practice
Interact with patients in a professional, courteous, and reassuring manner
Support a positive, team‑oriented clinical environment and participate in ongoing training and staff meetings
Maintain flexibility in scheduling to support clinic and surgical needs
Qualifications
Certificate or degree from an accredited Surgical Technologist program
Strong attention to detail with confidence and reliability in a surgical setting
Knowledge of sterile technique, sanitation, and infection‑control standards
Ability to work independently while circulating in and out of the operating room
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and care teams
Ableto appropriately direct patient inquiries according to Athenix services, standards, and best practices
