Project Engineer - Transmission
Incorporated in 1948, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC) provides reliable, cost-effective, environmentally balanced, wholesale electric services to our 11-member distribution cooperatives in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. Our core business is generating, purchasing and delivering electricity to our members. ODEC is a not-for-profit generation and transmission cooperative that operates for the benefit of our members, who are our owners. Our home office is located in Glen Allen, Virginia.
Purpose of Job: Seeking a creative, energetic, and passionate engineering professional to serve as our Project Engineer in the Glen Allen, VA home office. This position is responsible for developing, managing and executing generation and transmission projects from conception to completion. Individual will be instrumental in all aspects of project management for new construction, capital improvements and large maintenance projects.
Essential responsibilities include: Project Management to include successfully executing approved projects within scope, budget and satisfaction of clients Managing generation and transmission projects to include conceptualization, permitting, engineering, scheduling, budget control, procurement, construction, commissioning, and turnover Developing and maintaining budget and schedule controls for projects and supporting department budget development. Managing and resolving all project issues that have technical, budget or schedule implications.
Managing engineering design review to include conceptual engineering, detailed engineering and management of associated data and correspondence
Recommending and supporting potential generation and transmission projects to improve asset reliability and availability.
Managing requests for proposals (RFPs) for engineering consultants and construction contractors
Providing operational and technical support for generation and transmission assets.
Collaborating and partnering with engineering and operations staff, other internal departments, external consultants, contractors, other utility companies, and independent power producers (IPP).
Prepares and presents technical recommendations and reports.
Work Experience 12 years’ combined experience in electrical and/or mechanical engineering
8 years’ combined experience in power generation, transmission and/or distribution
3 years’ combined experience in project management and/or project engineering
Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Transmission experience required
Effective communicator verbally and in writing
Ability to multi-task and effectively manage time and meet deadlines
Ability to effectively work with ambiguity
Preferred Knowledge and Skills Utility industry experience
Education Bachelor of Science in engineering (BSEE or BSME preferred) or equivalent experience
Travel details Occasional overnight travel required in this position
Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Interact effectively with others through verbal communication, video, email and text
Conduct regular and safe travel via automobile for several overnights each month (approximately 35% annual travel)
Ability to use a keyboard and monitor frequently
Frequently perform fieldwork, which may involve walking over rough terrain during all types of weather conditions
Frequently spend a number of hours outdoors exposed to all weather conditions, typically in high voltage substations or power plants
Walking on uneven surfaces
Ability to climb ladders, potentially several feet high, and walk on platforms
Occasional heavy lifting and/or moving items up to 50 pounds
