Job Summary The Asphalt Foreman will lead and manage a crew specializing in asphalt paving and repair, primarily focusing on restoration work related to utility cuts, trenches, manholes, and site patching/corrections. This role requires expert knowledge of asphalt paving techniques, strong leadership skills, and a commitment to safety, quality, and project timelines. The Foreman is responsible for planning, executing, and supervising all field operations for their assigned restoration projects.
Crew Leadership & Management
Direct Supervision: Lead, mentor, and motivate a crew of 3-5 members (laborers, operators, and truck drivers).
Safety Enforcement: Ensure strict adherence to OSHA and MUTCD regulations; conduct daily Job Safety Analyses and toolbox talks.
Training & Development: Train crew members on proper paving techniques, equipment operation, and safety procedures.
Performance Management: Set performance expectations, monitor output, and address any personnel issues or inefficiencies.
Project Execution & Quality Control
Pre-Job Planning: Review job specs and coordinate with the Superintendent; ensure permits, traffic control plans, utility clearances.
Field Operations: Oversee all phases of asphalt restoration:
Trench excavation and backfilling stabilization.
Sub-grade preparation and compaction.
Tack coat application.
Hot Mix Asphalt paving, raking, and spreading.
Operating and directing roller equipment to meet density specifications.
Ensuring smooth transitions and correct tie‑ins to existing pavement.
Quality Assurance: Monitor material temperature, compaction levels, mat smoothness, and layer thickness to guarantee a high-quality, durable finished product.
Resource Management: Manage material, equipment, and labor hours efficiently; minimize waste and stay on budget.
Documentation & Communication
Daily Reporting: Complete accurate daily production reports, timecards, equipment logs, and safety documentation.
Problem Solving: Act as primary contact on site for technical issues, unforeseen challenges, or material delays.
Stakeholder Relations: Communicate professionally with general contractors, utility representatives, inspectors, and the public regarding job progress, timelines, and site access.
Required Qualifications
Experience: Minimum 3‑5 years in asphalt paving; at least 1‑2 years in a Foreman or supervisory role. Restoration, maintenance, or utility‑related paving experience highly preferred.
Technical Knowledge: Expert understanding of asphalt mix types, compaction techniques, equipment operation, and base preparation.
Certifications: Valid Driver's License (CDL preferred); OSHA 10‑Hour or 30‑Hour, MUTCD/Traffic Control certification preferred.
Skills:
Proven leadership and crew management.
Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
Ability to read construction plans, grade stakes, specifications.
Proficiency with basic construction math and leveling tools/devices.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Lifting up to 50 lbs and standing for extended periods.
Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and overtime.
Salary: $34.00 - $39.00 per hour
