Registered Nurses (RNs)
in
Des Moines, Iowa , where we manage healthcare for individuals incarcerated in the
Polk County Jail .
New grads are encouraged to apply — we’ll train you in the exciting field of correctional healthcare!
Responsibilities
Perform initial health screenings and physical assessments of newly detained individuals.
Monitor and document patient health including vital signs and medical histories.
Provide direct patient care, triage, assess patient needs, develop care plans, and coordinate services.
Manage acute and chronic conditions such as asthma, hypertension, and diabetes.
Respond to medical emergencies, provide first aid, and ensure timely transport to appropriate healthcare facilities.
Educate patients on preventative care, healthy lifestyle choices, and substance abuse prevention.
Understand and adhere to correctional facility security protocols, working closely with correctional officers and other healthcare professionals to ensure safety and well‑being of patients.
Maintain accurate medical records, document treatment plans, and report any relevant information.
Qualifications
Holds a current, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse within the IA.
Must possess an active BLS CPR Certification (AHA preferred).
Knowledge of nursing practice principles and techniques, occupational health and safety standards, infectious disease management, applicable health‑care laws, regulations, and procedures for direct health‑care services.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of all proprietary and/or confidential information.
Excellent communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
Able to work independently and in a team.
Flexible schedule and availability to work overtime when needed.
Integrity, professionalism, and ability to adhere to a Code of Conduct and comply with all facility correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
Must pass the facility’s criminal background check and drug screening.
Physical Capabilities Must have the ability to stand for long periods, lift and move patients (up to 50 pounds), bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks like CPR while maintaining good balance and endurance throughout a shift.
