JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION:

Provides nursing care to designated patients under the direction/supervision of a Registered Nurse in the Observation Unit/Emergency Department. Performs job duties appropriately for the needs of the age population served, and participates in the assessment for disposition of care as defined in the department's scope of service. Performance Criteria

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to: Performs nursing care according to standards and individualized needs of the patients. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: Provides nursing care for patients receiving services in the Emergency Department. Collects data essential to assessment and indicates deviations from normal to the physician. Assists Physician(s) and Registered Nurse(s) perform patient assessments. Develops appropriate educational tools for patients and their family members. Provides instructions to patients and family members. Individualizes patient care based upon physical, psychosocial and educational needs. Escorts patients to and from treatment rooms.

Maintains patient records and charts to ensure an accurate record of the patient's medical treatment. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: Documents appropriately in all assigned patient records. Accurately documents medication administration, treatments, collected data, interventions, and unusual occurrences. Completes documentation before end of shift. Demonstrates ability to observe and record the signs, symptoms and behaviors, including the physiological status of patients. Documents all pertinent patient activities, nursing interventions and patient concerns in a timely manner.

Assists physicians with examinations and procedures. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: Prepares patients for exams according to established procedures. Assists physicians with exams and/or special procedures as requested. Responds to and/or reports to physicians pertinent information regarding patients that includes test results, reports from family members, etc. Adheres to infection control and safety practices. Performs special treatment procedures/protocols as instructed by physicians.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Experience Requirements

Two years nursing experience preferred. Educational Requirements

Crisis Prevention training within six months. Special Skill, License and Knowledge Requirements

Current Louisiana LPN licensure HIPAA Requirements

Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Medical records without limitation both paper and electronic, patient demographics, lab and radiology results, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, medical records related to quality/data, patient financial information, patient billing 3rd party, patient related complaints, information related to patient location, patients' religious beliefs, and/or research information. Safety Requirements

Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, administers medications, validates patients for any procedures/surgery, transports, monitors and observes patients with infusion pump, monitors clinical alarms, and collects blood samples.
