Overview
Collects and prepares blood specimens for laboratory testing, represents the laboratory to patients and their families. Reviews physician orders, obtains clinical and demographic information, prints draw lists, and verifies patient identification and correct specimen type for tests requested. Responsibilities
Perform phlebotomy technique, including venipuncture, micro collection, bleeding times, blood cultures, therapeutic phlebotomy, and blood bank specimen collection. Ensure positive patient identification and prioritize duties to achieve efficiency. Respond to changes in work schedules and volumes, using time effectively when workloads are light. Answer telephone calls to schedule tests, relay accurate information, and respond to stat draw requests from patient care areas. Direct calls to appropriate areas or persons. Obtain and enter information into the LIS and HIS, registering patients into HIS, updating demographics and insurance information. Order test information, print labels, and label specimens at point of service. Maintain equipment and inventory of needed supplies; keep patient drawing area clean and tidy. Maintain phlebotomy basket/cart and ensure safety measures are followed. Recognize the Phlebotomist-Registrar's role in laboratory, patient care, customer service and business of healthcare. Follow biohazard safety procedures, including use of pneumatic tube system, manual specimen delivery, disposal of blood collection equipment, and changing gloves between patients. Display bedside manner and attitude toward the patient. Perform medical necessity checks for out-patient phlebotomy. Ensure specimens are packaged properly and delivered to Specimen Processing in a timely manner. Serve as a resource and train new employees. Qualifications
Entry-level graduates will be considered. Ability to communicate effectively, politely, cooperatively, and discreetly with patients, physicians, hospital employees, and the public. Ability to work under pressure. Willingness to increase knowledge of laboratory/hospital functions. Demonstrates creativity and initiative in problem solving. Phlebotomy certification within 1 year. Essential Competencies & Skills
Knowledge of office equipment. Clear communication skills (written and verbal). Knowledge of basic computer programs. Ability to keep confidential patient information. Ability to withstand crisis situations. Skills to provide customer service to patients, team members, and visitors. Experience with or completion of a course in medical terminology. Completion of a course in phlebotomy. Credentials
BLS - Basic Life Saving certification. Education
High school graduate or equivalent. Compensation
