The Phlebotomist is an instrumental first point of service contact for patients, vendors, and visitors who receive services within the Laboratory Department. The colleague provides general support for functions related to their specific tasks and adheres to rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies, as well as accrediting bodies.
Responsibilities
Blood extraction from patients through venipuncture, finger sticks, or heel sticks; venipuncture preferred.
Reduce needle anxiety for patients.
Analyze blood specimens using the correct testing equipment when necessary.
Prepare specimens for transportation, including labeling vials accurately and matching blood specimens to patient information.
Utilize two patient identifiers when identifying patients.
Filing, data entry, faxing, stocking of supplies, collecting drug screens and processing biological specimens (blood, urine, stool, and other bodily fluids).
Maintain a current Chain of Custody certification with up-to-date training on 49 CFR Part 40 regulations.
Process insurance/payment information.
Prioritize duties and specimens (stat vs. routine) and manage time, working quickly without compromising quality.
Access reference laboratories’ online portals to retrieve results.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Certifications
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Medical Assistant and/or Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
Experience as a phlebotomist in a hospital setting preferred.
Current BLS (AHA or ASHI) (Can be obtained within 90 days of hire).
Demonstrated competencies in appropriate areas.
Good communication and listening skills.
Must pass an AHCA Level 2 Background Check.
Must be able to speak, read, and write the English language.
