Operations Control Center Technician - Part Time

Overview This is a benefits‑eligible role, working part‑time 20‑hour per week. The Operations Division manages Tufts' 5 million square feet of buildings and properties, providing safety, maintenance, mail, transportation, and construction services. They are responsible for efficient, cost‑effective, and safe operations of our campuses, and for maintaining and managing our university assets to support research and education. The Operations Control Center is the hub of daily activity for maintenance and support services involving campus facilities and grounds. We seek a highly motivated individual who can develop mastery in operating and interpreting data from building automation systems and facilities work‑management systems, serving as an integral team member redefining maintenance management standards across the university.
What You'll Do
Perform a full range of assignments on the operation of the university’s building automated controls systems (BAS), primarily Johnson Controls, for all university buildings, including science and research complexes.
Continuously hone expertise in evaluating and reacting to data from building automation and alarm systems, and the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), Maximo.
Use independent judgement and university protocols to deploy resources in response to facilities‑based emergencies and work requests across varied situations.
Provide inputs to evolving building system and equipment job plans, building alarm monitoring and response protocols, and emergency response protocols.
Collaborate with facilities management on work priorities, understanding building, zone, and occupant needs and the impact of preventative maintenance on building‑system operability.
Ensure integrity, accuracy, and completeness of facilities repair and maintenance work‑order data in the CMMS system, and capture data to support the Division’s Asset Management Program.
Ensure data supporting all facilities activities are accurately categorized in the CMMS and BAS systems, and understand how this data feeds into KPIs and activity‑based reporting for continuous improvement.
Basic Requirements
Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field.
1–3 years of experience with environmental controls and business automation systems in a research, lab, medical, or equivalent environment.
Working knowledge of HVAC systems and energy‑management control systems.
Ability to multitask in a fast‑paced environment while demonstrating professional, courteous demeanor and maintaining positive customer relationships.
Ability to read complex blueprints and control submittals.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.
Substantial experience with CMMS.
Working knowledge of building and safety code requirements, and building, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC maintenance and repair methods.
Familiarity with Uniform Building Code, BOMA Standards, ADA Regulation.
Ability to review and interpret service contracts and technical specifications.
Experience overseeing service providers and service contracts.
Demonstrated customer service skills.
Computer skills: Windows, Word, Excel, database, BAS, and CMMS.
JCI BAS controls monitoring experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience utilizing Maximo CMMS.
JCI BAS controls monitoring experience.
Special Work Schedule Requirements
This benefits‑eligible, part‑time role works 20‑hour per week on‑site in Grafton, with training likely in Medford/Somerville.
Operation runs 6:00 AM‑7:00 PM.
Shift primarily on the Grafton campus, Monday‑Friday, 9:00 AM‑1:00 PM.
Schedules assigned based on business need; flexibility is key.
Position is essential, requiring reporting to work during weather emergencies or other mandatory events.
Pay Range Minimum $30.00, Midpoint $35.70, Maximum $41.40. Salary based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; typically between minimum and midpoint.
Employees must complete all appropriate background checks at the time of hire, promotion, or transfer.
