Summary The Emergency Dept Technician provides direct patient care in a busy emergency department, working as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver timely, patient‑centered care. Responsibilities include specimen collection, vital signs, supply stocking, cleaning, patient transport, clerical tasks, lab collection, respiratory treatments, and assisting with procedures under RN or physician supervision.

Responsibilities

Maintain a friendly customer‑oriented attitude and treat all patients, families, visitors, staff, and community members with kindness, compassion, and respect.

Follow RN direction and provide services as prescribed by the physician’s authorized plan of care, including minor treatments, responding to alarms, answering call lights, and assisting with transfers.

Report treatment effectiveness to the RN, make suggestions, and participate in updating the treatment plan in collaboration with the team.

Comply with all local, state, and federal regulations; maintain knowledge of MyMichigan Health and ED specific policies.

Demonstrate safety awareness, infection prevention and control, and use appropriate lift equipment; participate in safety drills.

Attend education days, pursue self‑education, and keep up‑to‑date with clinical and technical skills.

Provide direct patient care: collect vital signs, weight, perform intravenous access, assist with procedures, maintain clean exam rooms, and manage equipment such as cardiac monitors and emergency devices.

Maintain documentation and assist with quality improvement activities.

Handle clerical duties, answer phone, enter labs, and perform other secretarial tasks.

Assist with minor medical procedures and maintain knowledge of sterile technique.

Respond to emergency situations, provide a safe environment, and observe safety precautions.

Assist with ordering and stocking supplies, including pharmacy orders and weekly purchasing.

Required Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Experience and Training

Equivalent experience within 1 month of hire (or as listed per credential)

Must hold current internal MidMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or a current State of Michigan registry document as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or be an EMT with state licensure.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Must handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, and stay alert.

Must wear protective equipment, move freely with or without assistance, and be capable of frequent standing, walking, kneeling, or crouching.

Physical demand: Very Heavy, capable of lifting 100 lbs (0‑33 % of the workday), 50 lbs (34‑66 %), 20 lbs (67‑100 %).

Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death.

Must comply with bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
