The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering a postdoctoral fellowship at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command - Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRDC MRIID). What will I be doing?
As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to engage in basic and applied research utilizing current methodologies in virology, immunology, and molecular biology with a focus on preventing disease caused by high consequence viruses for the protection or treatment of the Warfighter. Education
The development and characterization of animal models and/or microphysiological systems for viral agents. Emphasis is placed on determining virus dissemination and pathology following infection, as well as identifying potential targets for future medical countermeasures. The opportunity to collect and analyze data from a diverse research portfolio provides participants the chance to develop new research skills and build professional networks. Most, but not all, of this research is conducted in either BSL-3 or BSL-4 high containment laboratories. This appointment will require enrollment in a Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP). The USAMRDC MRIID is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified. What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a twelve‑month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant. What are the provisions?
Health Insurance Supplement (Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE) Relocation Allowance Training and Travel Allowance Security Clearance
While participants will not enter an employment relationship with DoD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation, which may include federal drug screening. About USAMRDC MRIID

Participants do not enter an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate will have a doctoral degree in virology, microbiology, or infectious diseases. Degree must have been received within three years of the appointment start date or will have completed by May 31, 2026. Highly competitive applicants will have experience in virology research. Preferred Skills
Knowledge and background in virology/ molecular biology/serology/cell biology BSL-2/3 laboratory experience with hands‑on experience in wet‑lab procedures Functional knowledge of molecular techniques such as PCR, real‑time PCR, PCR primer/probe design and DNA sequencing and analysis Excellent organizational skills, ability to multitask, collaborate and work in a team Proficiency in technical writing, oral communication, interpersonal and organizational skills Critical thinking skills to develop experimental approaches and interpret data. Demonstrated flexibility and self‑motivation. Successful applicants should be highly motivated and welcome the use of a variety of approaches to address important, challenging scientific problems.
