Position Overview Field Service Technician I responsible for performing substation testing as an entry‑level test technician. Tasks are performed with assistance from more experienced technicians, with safety being the top priority.
Job Purpose This position requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, often near moving mechanical parts or at heights, in hazardous areas. Candidates must be comfortable with exposure to wet/humid conditions, temperature extremes, fumes, traffic, potential electrical shock hazards, noise pollution, and vibration.
Key Responsibilities
Knowledge of electrical theory and ability to communicate transformer operations.
Perform basic tests on transformers and circuit breakers (e.g., insulation resistance, contact resistance, core ground, oil sampling, ratio tests).
Read and understand drawings and diagrams.
Assist with grounding—knowledge of clearance, LOTO, etc.
Set up testing equipment.
Lead the safety culture; adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.
Participate in safety training programs and meetings.
Ensure that all field service activities comply with safety guidelines and company policies.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; supplemental courses in electrical maintenance are highly desired.
Current, valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
Ability to crawl, climb, stand, and lift up to 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodations in high‑voltage substations.
Ability to pass a fit‑for‑duty exam.
Availability for regular overnight domestic travel and occasional international travel related to high‑voltage substation work.
Willingness to work flexible hours, overtime, and occasional weekends, holidays, and nights.
Willingness to travel up to 75% of the time as needed for high‑voltage substation work.
Preferred Qualifications
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
NCCO Crane Certification.
Knowledge of fundamentals and principles of electricity.
Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions required in a power distribution facility.
Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and prints.
Ability to read and interpret various power generation and distribution metering and recording devices.
Ability to learn industry practices and procedures.
Ability to follow oral and written directions.
Compensation Hourly rate: $25.00 – $32.00 per hour.
