The Registered Nurse ECMO Specialist coordinates and delivers high quality, patient-centered care. The RN ECMO Specialist performs Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) therapy to support patients with impaired heart and lung function. The RN serves as an advocate for patients and supports an unparalleled patient experience. What you will do in this role:
Perform procedures or other functions as ordered by the medical provider.
Document the administration of care in the patient medical record in a timely and thorough manner.
Perform the administration of prescribed medications and monitors response.
Prepare and operate clinical equipment and circuitry per ECMO policies.
Maintain and assess ECMO circuit function.
Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and recommend revisions to the multidisciplinary care team.
What qualifications you will need: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) must be obtained within 90 days of employment start date
Basic Life Support (BLS) must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
Registered Nurse
High School Graduate / GED
Registered Nurse Diploma, or Associate Degree, or Bachelor's Degree
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Primer – REGISTERED NURSE The ECMO Primer, RN must have equivalent qualifications, competence and function in the same role as employed individuals performing the same or similar services at the facility, as defined by facility job description. Essential Job Functions: The Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Primer, RN assists physicians in the management and operation of the ECMO machine. Scope of Service may include:
Develops treatment plan involving: a. Assessments b. Planning c. Implementation d. Evaluation e. Education
Monitors and adjusts ECMO circuit settings (e.g. heat exchanger temperature, pump flow, sweep gas) to maintain parameters established by the ECMO physician.
Responsible for assisting and support of the ECMO team.
Builds and primes circuit for ECMO, which includes components as specified by the ECMO physician.
Monitors equipment closely during procedure for any changes in patient’s condition and informs physician immediately.
Assists with initiations, circuit changes, decannulations, and changes to configuration to include sterile procedure with physician.
Serves as resource to bedside nurse on ECMO physiology, pump function, and troubleshooting.
Correlates and records data obtained during the procedure.
Demonstrates Clinical and Service excellence behaviors to include HCA Healthcare code of conduct core fundamentals in daily interactions with patients, families, co-workers and physician.
The ECMO Primer RN will demonstrate:
Safe and effective operation of equipment; maintains equipment in good working order
Demonstrates effective infection control practices related to equipment operation
Accurate patient information review and evaluation; uses at least two ways to identify patients before performing procedure; accesses the patient medical record appropriately
Infection Prevention: hand hygiene, PPE, required immunizations, isolation precautions
Preps, builds, and primes ECMO circuits; maintains equipment in good working order
ECMO initiation: maintain sterile field and assist ECMO physician when initiating ECMO
ECMO decannulation: maintain sterile field and assist ECMO physician when decannulating ECMO
ECMO procedures; configuration changes and in-house transports
Assist physical therapy and occupational therapy
ECMO circuit advanced troubleshooting and emergencies: monitor, thrombosis, function, equipment failure, air
Accidental decannulation
Instruct and mentor ECMO specialist
Annual competency skills validation
Complete 3 clear primes quarterly in wet labs or clinical scenarios
Participate in at least one prime/ECMO initiation or circuit change
Must work at least two 12-hour ECMO Specialist shifts in a six month period
