JOB SUMMARY:
The purpose of an instructional assistant (IA) is to assist in the supervision and instruction of special needs students under the supervision of a certificated teacher in a special education classroom and/or as part of a pullout program; observe and document student progress; implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs); provide personal hygiene and medical support for students and clerical support to the teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS OF POSITION:
High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education
Must be 18 years of age
Job related experience is preferred
Must be able to pass a fingerprint/background check.
Perform physical requirements which may include:
Moderate degree of physical stamina
Frequent standing, walking, bending
Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs
Physically restraining a student as needed (OIS Certification required), per building need
Possible exposure to bodily fluids in assisting students with using restrooms and tending to illness or injury (Blood Borne Pathogen Training provided)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ability to maintain the confidentiality of students and their records
Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g. collects and maintains student data, adapting instructional materials, student files, checking papers, attendance, audiovisual equipment, set up projects, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing reliable information
Ability to assist students with personal hygiene tasks (diapering, for example)
Ability to assist students with medical procedures (tube feeding, diabetic seizures) that could result in exposure to bodily fluids
Responds to emergencies (e.g. injured student, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns
Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as a part of an instructional team
Ability to work effectively in an environment that can be both physically and emotionally fatiguing
Attends meetings and in-service presentations as requested or required. Required training could include; Oregon Intervention System, medical procedures, health and safety training, First Aid, and CPR
Confers with teachers (special education and/or mainstream teacher) on a regular basis for the purpose of assisting in evaluating special education student progress and/or implementing IEP objectives
Instruction of special education students (e.g. math groups, science experiments, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc.) for the purpose of implementing goals for remediation of student deficiencies and ensuring students success
Monitors special education students (e.g. classroom, field trips, lunch, playground, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment
Ability to work with students who may exhibit aggressive behavior, (kicking, hitting, spitting, scratching, language and biting) and implement behavior plans designed by IEP teams
Ability to carry through with classroom and/or building procedures for discipline and positive supports
Supervise students at work experience or in the community without direct teacher supervision
Acts as a mandated abuse reporter
Knowledge of Astoria School District Policies and building procedures
Regular and acceptable attendance is required
Performs other duties as assigned
