Overview The SBU Academy is an after‑school youth development academic program that provides student‑athletes ages 11‑14 with academic support, social‑emotional learning, and college and career development. Volunteers serve as Academic Mentors, working closely with boys and girls to help them reach grade‑level proficiency in Math and English.

Volunteer Role Academic Mentor

– 2 hours per week, one day a week, for a semester. Preferred time: 3:45‑5:45 pm Tuesdays/Thursdays at Careers in Sports High School, 730 Concourse Village West, Bronx, NY 10451. Mentors may volunteer additional shifts if desired.

Primary Responsibilities

Provide one‑on‑one or small‑group support to students in the SBU Academy.

Assist students with their homework and help them reach grade‑level proficiency in Math and English Language Arts.

Foster academic growth by offering guidance, resources, and support tailored to each student’s needs.

Build relationships with students through consistent weekly meetings on a set day for 2 hours.

Serve as a positive adult role model and mentor in the lives of the youth.

Passion for education: demonstrated interest in supporting students’ academic growth and success.

Excellent verbal communication skills and strong active listening in English; bilingual volunteers welcome.

Patience and empathy to create a safe, supportive environment.

Reliability and responsibility: commitment to attend mentoring sessions consistently and be punctual.

Training & Support An orientation and training session will be provided at the beginning of the semester, covering general guidelines, mentoring tips, and the specific needs of SBU Academy students. Intermittent check‑ins and additional training sessions will be offered throughout the semester.

Additional Involvement Mentors are encouraged to engage with students who also play on the South Bronx United Soccer Teams by attending games or practices, thereby building relationships through a shared passion for the sport.

Requirements Age minimum 18+.
