Parks & Recreation Program Supervisor - Outdoor Recreation The City of Roanoke is seeking an Outdoor Recreation Program Supervisor to perform work that involves planning, coordinating, developing, promoting and supervising a variety of City-wide or facility based outdoor recreational opportunities for area residents as well as area schools, community organizations, church groups, recreation centers, and other agencies (including but not limited to mountain biking, bike touring, kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, caving, and climbing). Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with a major in recreation, leisure services or related field; one to two years related experience and/or training in recreation and leisure services; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

SUMMARY Performs work that involves planning, organizing, promoting and developing a variety of City-wide or facility based recreational opportunities for area residents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists in the planning, coordination and implementation of recreation programs; supervises and evaluates programs

Recruits, interviews, hires, supervises and evaluates part-time program staff

Evaluates programs and make recommendations regarding their continuation

Coordinates and plans recreation services with schools, community organizations, church groups, recreation centers and other agencies, obtain all appropriate permits.

Determines program content and scope; sets goals and evaluates effectiveness

Assists in the preparation of and makes recommendations regarding budgets; monitors expenditures and allocates funds.

Researches and submits grants for funding for new or existing programs.

Promotes programs and services through news releases, flyers, and other available media resources.

Purchases materials and supplies as requested and/or required.

Leads programs, activities or community events including summer programs; assists with the registration process.

Provides for the safe operation of city vehicles (training staff, transporting participants, maintenance).

Schedules, coordinates and ensures the preparation of recreation centers and other facilities for use.

Conducts research and writes reports regarding recreational services.

Serves on committees and maintains relationships with leaders in the community.

Assists in preparation of part-time payroll.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Supervision may be exercised over volunteers, instructors and part-time staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with a major in recreation, leisure services or related field; one to two years related experience and/or training in recreation and leisure services; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, risk management plans, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and prepare correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of citizens or employees of organization. Ability to serve as department's liaison with community groups.

REASONING ABILITY Ability to understand and carry out instructions provided in written, or oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Professional certification as needed and required.
