The substitute secretary supports the school office by providing clerical and administrative assistance in the absence of the regular secretary. This position ensures continuity of school operations by greeting and assisting visitors, managing communications, and performing essential office tasks assigned by the administrator. Candidates must comply with and support MSD's regulations and policies. Substitute secretaries need to be available on an on-call basis. Position Duties
Acts as the first point of contact for students, staff, families, and visitors by greeting guests, answering calls, and directing inquiries to the appropriate people. Supports the office’s daily operations, including maintaining sign-in/sign-out logs and following school procedures for visitor management and student dismissals or late arrivals. Assists with attendance reporting and daily announcements. Supports emergency drills and responses. Provides clerical support with basic office tasks. Maintains strict confidentiality of student and school personnel information. May be asked to assume other duties as assigned by the administrator or the Campus Chief Educational Programs Officer. Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required. Fluency in English and American Sign Language required. Experience: Two years performing office, secretarial type, or clerical work involving typing duties. Desired or Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of Deaf Community preferred. Special Requirements

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits. Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year. Further Instructions
