Job Summary Performs a variety of skilled, strenuous labor duties that involve the care of trees in an urban forest environment. Work involves pruning tree limbs, removing diseased and/or dead trees from city parks and other property.

Essential Functions

Maintains, plants, cares for, waters, prunes, and generally monitors all foliage, trees, and shrubs planted within the urban environment of the City; performs manual labor in the care and maintenance of all trees and related.

Receives work orders and requests from the City, other departments, or community members and performs necessary care using the appropriate tools; ensures trees are kept in tip-top health for a better environment and to be safe for the public.

Plans, digs, spaces, and stakes large trees and other foliage; waters and ensures the proper care for all newly planted trees and shrubs; monitors height clearances and other standards and regulations; performs storm and other emergency clean up and care.

Operates heavy and light equipment in various weather and inclement situations; identifies hazardous situations and mitigates risks; communicates with the community and general public concerning work orders and requests.

Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs to equipment; checks for cleanliness of tools and equipment; ensures all chainsaws, lift trucks, and wood chippers are in operable condition.

Drives and operates City trucks to transport workers, materials, and equipment to and from job sites.

Performs all other work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

General arboriculture methods and tree maintenance and care.

Knowledge of the use and care of hand and power tools, such as jackhammer, cement mixer, and power auger.

Knowledge of surface preparation and adaptability of various surface materials.

May require standard colors, configuration, and placement of lane markings and traffic signs.

Knowledge of custodial, carpentry, plumbing, painting, mechanics, landscaping, and specialized equipment.

Ability to receive oral and written instructions.

Ability to perform math calculations; read charts and maintain written records.

Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods.

Ability to lift and work with heavy equipment.

Establish and maintain strong working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications Two (2) years tree maintenance experience (pruning, trimming, planting and removal of trees).

License and Certifications

Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

Must obtain class A or B Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within probationary period.

Other Requirements

Subject to inclement weather conditions.

Availability to work twenty-four (24/7) on‑call status.

Salary Range $21.67 - $23.60 per hour. The salary listed is the starting range; the amount offered will depend on qualifications.
