Job Goal: Assist teachers in the instruction of students with special needs, as assigned by the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, within the special education program and curriculum guidelines.
Position Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsement
Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting, implementation, and evaluation.
Responsibilities
Train certified teachers of special populations, general education teachers, and other staff to ensure compliance with confidentiality laws.
Participate in professional development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned.
Assist school administration in scheduling classes for SPED instruction.
Plan and implement staff development and in‑service programs related to special education.
Monitor SPED/504 students’ academic progress and use assessment results to coordinate instruction and schedule.
Compile, maintain, submit and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and documents required by district, state and federal laws.
Ensure that SPED classrooms or instructional environments are safe, organized, and conducive to learning, with accessibility for all students.
Establish and maintain written and oral communication with parents, students, principals, and teachers to keep them informed of student progress.
Collaborate with district personnel, regional service centers, and other professionals to deliver school‑wide instruction or related activities for SPED/504 students.
Collaborate with general education teachers to meet SPED/504 students’ instructional needs.
Advocate for SPED/504 students to ensure equitable educational opportunity.
Communicate with students on instructional expectations and progress.
Provide SPED instruction if assigned and comply with the SPED teacher position description.
Support general education/special education teachers and administrators in implementing appropriate strategies.
Support implementation of accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs.
Implement instructional programs that utilize knowledge of learning styles and modalities and align IEPs with the regular curriculum.
Ensure timely dissemination of modifications, accommodations and IEPs to related teachers and personnel.
Plan, develop, implement, and administer programs and services to meet identified needs, including new program development.
Plan, prepare, and facilitate ARD meetings and serve as a member of the ARD/IEP committee.
Participate in placement decisions based on educational, sociological, and physiological data.
Assist regular school personnel in providing an appropriate environment for mainstreamed students.
Develop new objectives based on evaluation findings and present recommendations to the ARD committee.
Redesign curriculum to suit objectives.
Suggest alternative teaching methods.
Assess relationship between student performance and handicapping condition.
Identify needs for remedial or tutorial assistance.
Coordinate input from special education staff to meet each child’s needs.
Maintain confidential records of assigned students and complete reports and other evaluations.
Coordinate discipline issues for Special Education and 504 students and attend the discipline committee meeting.
Arrange related services with outside personnel (speech therapist, diagnostician, OT, PT, etc.).
Provide SPP data and ensure its reliability.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
Effective written and oral communication with all levels of management.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally.
Ability to organize special programs for the assigned campus.
Computer proficiency with district software, databases, spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
Data analysis skills.
Effective interview, public speaking, and problem‑solving skills.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Light work with occasional light lifting.
Classroom setting requiring intermittent speaking, standing, walking, and writing.
Moderate travel required.
