This is a key intermediate level position within our manufacturing facility which produces quality food products for our customers. The Ammonia Refrigeration/Maintenance Technician is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of ammonia refrigeration and HVAC utility equipment/systems, along with machine set‑up, troubleshooting equipment failures, and performing repair and preventive maintenance services ensuring that all safety procedures are being followed.
Duties And Responsibilities
Must be flexible for overtime and weekend work.
Maintaining and servicing ammonia refrigeration systems and related utility equipment, and maintaining all necessary paperwork associated with the Process Safety Management program.
Daily chemical testing of condenser cooling water and logging all test results, making adjustments required to maintain cooling water.
Provides emergency unscheduled troubleshooting and repairs of production equipment during the manufacturing process, performs scheduled maintenance repairs of production and facility equipment.
Performs ammonia systems established preventative maintenance and identifies new PM activities, as needed.
Complies with plant regulatory programs such as PSM and Risk Management Program (RMP).
Performs mechanical skills including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and carpentry troubleshooting and repair of packaging and production line machines.
Reads and interprets equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service. Creates and modifies preventive maintenance procedures.
Coordinates and expedites repair operations with production supervisors.
Ensures that equipment is running at proper speeds to achieve throughput standards and quality.
Manages daily work orders, completes required paperwork in a timely manner.
Performs cleaning operations using detergent baths, degreasing, grit blasting, wire brushing, etc.
Uses power hand tools daily in a safe manner.
Performs equipment inspections, correcting any process or safety deviations.
Writes reports as needed, including Daily Communication Report, sharing information that has occurred on their shift.
Follows OSHA, AIB, SQF Standards. Recommends and implements improvements needed to comply with standards. Follows Company Handbook Standards and Rules.
Reports unsafe conditions and work‑related accidents to Team Leader, Plant Manager, or Safety Manager immediately.
Evaluates hazards, verifies the measures and procedures that should be taken to achieve a safe work environment.
Ensures daily adherence to the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) Regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma, GED, or technical school education.
Five years related experience in an industrial manufacturing environment in a Maintenance Position, preferably in an automated food processing plant.
RETA CARO certification required – Ammonia Operator I, II, III.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to effectively train others.
Must be able to read work documents in English.
Good understanding of plant quality requirements.
Good working knowledge of GMPs.

Work involves daily and frequent exposure to unusual elements such as dirt, dust, fumes, odors, darkness and/or poor lighting, noise, and vibration. Seasonal exposure to weather elements including extreme temperatures, wetness, and humidity.
Work environment involves daily exposure to physical risks and hazards, such as working around mechanical equipment, forklifts, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, fire and explosives hazards, communicable diseases.
Position requires the ability to stand; walk around office, warehouse, and plant; lift and carry packages up to 50 pounds; utilize fine dexterity; and reach, kneel, crawl, and twist on a daily basis. Also requires the ability to see; hear; and communicate with associates as well as others by utilizing professional etiquette.
Bump caps, safety glasses, goggles, gloves, ear plugs, lockout devices, fall protection and any other personal protective equipment, as defined by C.H. Guenther and Son will be provided.
Work involves frequent exposure to time pressures, frequent change of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, tedious and exacting work, irregular work schedule and/or overtime, noisy and/or distracting environment, working closely with others as part of a team, and on rare occasion’s emergency situations.
