Fort Lewis College Physical Plant Services Residential Custodian I
Location: Durango, Colorado. Position available through the State of Colorado. Starting hourly wage: $19.16 per hour. Position posted until 11:59 p.m. 12/5/2025. This essential services position is eligible for overtime when pre‑approved, and may include call‑back pay and shift differential.
Job Summary Provides a safe, clean, and functional campus by maintaining college facilities and supporting campus events. Requires working during inclement weather, emergencies, and events. Available in regular, weekend, and shift work options.
Responsibilities
Cleaning entryways, lounges, hallways, communal bathrooms, kitchens, computer labs, and other facility areas.
Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, trash removal, window cleaning, cleaning fixtures, furniture, light fixtures, baseboards, walls, hard surfaces, hand rails, stairs, and floor mats using approved materials and techniques.
Inspecting and maintaining assigned area, ensuring it is clean, safe, and free of snow, ice, dirt, and debris.
Shoveling snow and disbursing salt.
Providing set‑up and take‑down support for campus events.
Cleaning all living spaces after students and guests vacate, including deep cleaning of bedrooms, bathrooms, appliances, furniture, common areas, and carpets.
Developing rapport with students and providing assistance with campus resources.
Referring or reporting student concerns as indicated by training.
Restocking cleaning materials and chemicals.
Maintaining a neat custodial closet and notifying Facilities Supervisor of needed supplies, vacuum bags, and filter changes.
Reporting equipment maintenance needs such as broken windows, blinds, appliances, or carpet damage.
Lifting up to 50 lbs and performing other physical tasks as required.
Coordinating teamwork and adapting to last‑minute changes.
Working flexible days and weekends to cover campus activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Six (6) months of experience in a related custodial or facility maintenance occupation.
Basic computer skills for timesheet entry, online training, work orders, email, and SDS sheet access.
Reading, writing, and oral comprehension.
Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Active listening skills.
Flexibility and adaptability to changing demands.
Physical ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch for extended periods.
Tolerance of noise, vibration, and inclement weather.
Capacity to follow policy, procedures, and supervision instructions.
Commitment to quality service.
Conditions of Employment
