Church of the Holy Spirit
Purpose of this Ministry:
To enhance the liturgical experience by ensuring the best musical accompaniment. This includes accompanying a choir singing traditional hymns and a cantor chanting Latin Mass parts. In addition to accompanying the choir and cantor the following responsibilities would also be included:
Position Summary and Duties
Play the organ (4 manual Rodgers/Ruffati/Wicks Hybrid) at the 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Sunday Masses. All hymns and service music is chosen by Coordinator of Music Ministry in advance.
Each Mass would include: the ordinaries, hymns and/or chants, and possibly preludes and postludes.
Playing the organ for Holy Days of Obligation (Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, etc.). This may include more than just the two normal Mass times.
30-minute rehearsal before each Mass
1 ½ hour rehearsal with traditional choir (September-June Thursday evenings)
Play the organ at special rehearsal times with adequate prior notification by the Coordinator of Music Ministry (i.e. extra rehearsals around Christmas and Easter, etc.)
Occasionally works with the vocalist to accompany on solos during the Mass.
First right of refusal for funerals, weddings, and other special liturgical rites using traditional music.
Recommending and then arranging for substitute musician as requested by Coordinator of Music Ministry when necessary (absences, etc.)
Able to substitute at other Mass times if need be.
Average Hours Devoted to this Ministry Each Week:
5-10
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Must be a person of faith committed to Gospel values. Must understand and support the mission and purpose of the Church and Parish.
Experience should be 2+ years playing the organ. Basic understanding of Catholic liturgy and music is required, with an openness to learning more. Good sight-reading skills are necessary, especially for weddings and funerals.
Must also be able to work alongside whoever is conducting the choir/cantor in rehearsing the music.
Ability to work effectively with children and adults.
Be an active listener with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and take directions and offer constructive suggestions.
Ability and willingness to play the piano is helpful but not required.
Responsibilities and Authority Supervision Received:
Reports directly to Business Manager in all matters pertaining to job responsibilities, time sheets, leave of absence, vacation and sick leave.
Management Positions Supervised:
