Day in the Life as a Janitor As a janitor you play a vital role in supporting our mission to provide services to the community. Customers expect clean, organized stores and your work makes that possible.

Essential Functions

Cleans and disinfects restrooms.

Dry mops and vacuums floors.

Wet mops floors.

Buffs floors.

Empties trash from stores and offices.

Sweeps and picks trash up from outside store each morning.

Cleans offices.

Washes windows and mirrors as necessary.

Keeps paper towel and toilet paper dispensers filled.

Sanitizes drinking fountains.

Cleans refrigerator.

Mows grass and pulls weeds, if necessary.

Clean spills, and disinfects, if required.

Shovels snow and salts or sands sidewalks and walkways.

Move items to and from the staging area for truck loading and unloading.

Pre‑sorts donations as required.

Accepts donations, distributes tax receipts and pre‑sorts donations by category.

Heavy lifting, pushing and pulling required.

Follows all safety rules and practices.

Performs all other duties as may be assigned by the Store Manager.

Maintains a positive work outlook and courteous demeanor when interacting with customers, donors, co‑workers, and clients.

Non‑Essential Functions

Empties trash from back rooms.

Attendance Goodwill, your co‑workers, and our customers depend on you to be at work as scheduled.

Job Performance Reviewed upon initial hire at 30, 60, and 90 days, and annually thereafter, by the Store Manager.

Supervisory Responsibilities None

Education No specialized educational requirements.

Experience Minimum of one year of work experience; previous janitorial experience preferred.

Knowledge/Skills Must be able to distinguish between types of cleaning products.

Credentials/Licenses/Screening Requirements

Subject to background check.

Ability to work within the team concept.

Ability to plan work and organize tasks.

Subject to random alcohol and drug testing.

Fully comply with Goodwill’s Code of Ethics.

Community Interaction Contact with customers, donors, and co‑workers.

Equipment

Hand truck or dolly, pallet jack, and carts.

Gloves and safety glasses.

Chemicals, buckets, mops, brooms, and floor safety cones.

Vacuum and buffer.

Complexity Work that requires attention and several readily understood rules and procedures in which employees may make decisions that could affect efficiency, accuracy, or correctness.

Confidentiality Little or no confidential information involved.

Physical Activities

Substantial: grasping, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, and walking.

Considerable: balancing.

Moderate: crouching, hearing, stooping, and talking.

Moderate: climbing.

Occasional: crawling, kneeling, and repetitive motions.

Physical Requirements Heavy work: pushing and pulling up to 100 pounds.

The ability to fully perform lifting and moving duties is mandatory.

Environmental Conditions The worker is subject to both outdoor and indoor environmental conditions.
