Position Description Location: Legal Aid office location (significant statewide travel required)

Legal Aid of Nebraska (LAN) seeks an experienced and mission-driven attorney to serve as Managing Attorney for its Agricultural Workers Rights Program. This leadership role combines strategic oversight, staff supervision, and direct legal advocacy on behalf of migrant and agricultural workers across Nebraska.

The Managing Attorney is responsible for overseeing the operations and activities of a local Legal Aid of Nebraska office while ensuring the delivery of high-quality legal services to low-income Nebraskans. This position provides both strategic and day-to-day leadership, fostering strong staff performance, community partnerships, and positive client outcomes. The Managing Attorney serves as a key representative of Legal Aid of Nebraska within the judiciary, legal community, client communities, and with partner organizations statewide.

In addition to management responsibilities, the Managing Attorney maintains a limited caseload and provides direct legal services to migrant and agricultural workers. Legal work includes providing information, advice, and representation in civil legal matters such as wage and employment disputes, housing issues, public benefits, and other state and federal protections impacting agricultural workers.

Essential Functions

Provide information, advice, and representation to migrant and agricultural workers in civil legal matters.

Supervise, mentor, and support attorneys, paralegals, and administrative staff.

Oversee office operations and ensure compliance with LAN policies, procedures, and program requirements.

Maintain a limited active caseload, including trial and appellate litigation.

Review closed cases for legal quality and compliance.

Develop and maintain strong relationships with client communities and partner organizations.

Collaborate with community agencies and participate in outreach and education efforts.

Conduct legal research and prepare pleadings, motions, and legal analyses.

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with clients, colleagues, partners, and the public.

Participate in trainings, meetings, task forces, seminars, and conferences as requested.

Utilize LAN’s case management and office systems, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PIKA.

Ensure compliance with Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations and recordkeeping requirements.

Support and advance LAN’s mission, goals, and strategic priorities, including empowering clients toward self-sufficiency.
