Candidate Pool Custodian - Plant Operations, SY 2025-2026
Minneapolis Public Schools – Full‑time candidate pool position with no predetermined site. Candidates may be placed at any MPS location as openings occur.
Job Summary Under general supervision, this role assists with cleaning and maintenance of indoor and outdoor areas of district buildings.
Essential Functions
Wash, dust, and clean interior fixtures, windows, counters, and walls; sweep, vacuum, scrub and wax floors; clean and supply lavatories; replace light bulbs.
Maintain exterior areas: remove litter, mow, trim shrubs, edge lawns, remove snow and ice from walkways and steps.
Lawn and grounds care, including seasonal upkeep and snow removal.
Ensure safety rules are followed; maintain work equipment in safe condition.
Assist in lifting and moving furniture and setting up portable staging.
Apply safety precautions, clean spills and hazardous conditions per procedure.
Use chemicals safely following manufacturer directions and MSDS data.
Report unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, security issues and illegal activities.
Provide customer service to students, staff and visitors.
Participate in training and safety drills.
Operate opening/closing systems and respond to emergencies; assist with security duties.
Maintain confidentiality of work‑related information.
Perform other duties as needed and may work outside normal hours to meet requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED; or equivalent education, training or experience as approved by Human Resources.
Availability for the full time schedule (shifts vary by operational needs).
Pass a medical examination.
Knowledge
Building and grounds maintenance materials and equipment.
Basic cleaning techniques and procedures.
Federal and state safety rules and regulations.
Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Chemical handling, storage and MSDS compliance.
Skills
Operating and maintaining tools and equipment safely.
Maintaining safety standards.
Following verbal and written instructions.
Additional Requirements
May require a valid Minnesota State driver’s license.
Criminal background check is required.
Physical Demands Work both indoors and outdoors, requiring walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing ladders and lifting up to 60 pounds on a frequent basis.
Union Information Bargaining unit: SEIU – Janitors/Engineers/Bus Attendants/Ice Arena. Grade: J1. FLSA status: Non‑Exempt. Job group: Plant Operations.
Compensation and Hours Hourly rate: $18.00‑$19.00. Shift schedules include AM (5‑1:30 PM or 5:30‑2 PM), Mid‑Day (11 AM‑7:30 PM) and PM (12 - 8:30 PM or 1:30 - 10 PM). Exact schedules are determined by the hiring manager.
